42" LCD TV or 42" Plasma TV?

Q. So I'm buying a new TV here very soon and I'm curious as to what opinions you guys have.

I'm wanting to spend $500.00 at the most
An so far I've narrowed it down to 2 TVs.

The plasma seems to have very good reviews from what I see. and I actually went and looked at both TVs today in person and seem to like them both.

But the question is which to get?

I spend my spare time playing video games from time to time and play for a while at times. I know I've heard plasma is the best for gaming because of the 600 Hz but I've also heard that the 120 Hz isn't to bad either. An I also know 1080p is better picture wise. As well as playing games I'll be watching a lot of sports as well.

I like that the plasma is a bit cheaper too. As far as location I'll have it in a dimmer room so the glare shouldn't be too much of an issue if I was to purchase the plasma.

So story short, which to buy?

A. LCD is better.......better pic quality, better sound, and won't get burn marks in them. They also have a higher lifespan. To be honest with you plasma tv are a dying breed.

A. About all I can say is they are relative cheap, for the features offered, and offer a reasonable (not highest quality) picture. But you get what you pay for.
IMHO, stay away from the third tier (aka junk) TVs like Ilo, Maxent, Insignia, Element, Vizio, and Olevia, and those TV brands you usually associate with cameras and appliances, like Polaroid, Westinghouse, and RCA, or you WILL have problems with local service and parts, both in and out of warranty. Pay a little more now and save a lot later. Look at reliable, quality brands like Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Hitachi.

Most people said they just cancelled the order after 3 months or whatever, because of being in backorder limbo for months.

I did find a store selling the TV for $1850. It was at egghead.com, which is a very reputable on-line store. They charged me California sales tax, because the TV was coming from a warehouse in Los Angeles. But, shipping was free. And, the TV arrived safe and sound within 2 days.

Videophiles I need HDTV help... I am in the market for a budget HDTV should I go with Olevia or Vizio?

Q. I am buying a family member his first flat panel 1080p HDTV and I would like to stay between $800 and $1500 and get a 40"-47" LCD. After searching and searching, reading reviews and searching I have came down to the following two TVs.
1) the ultra-affordable Syntax Olevia 42 in. LCD Full HD (1080p) Television model # 242FHDTV for only $899
or
2) the larger 47" Vizio LCD Full HD (1080p) Gallevia HDTV model # GV47LFHDTV10A for $1499
They are both the best priced 1080p HDTVs on the market but I need help on which one I should go with.
His viewing distance will be between 8 and a around 11 feet. I have not found much in the way of reviews on either TV so I need some help. I love the price on the 42", but I much prefer the size on the 47" so it comes down to which one is the better TV and why?

A. Skip the LCD and buy a 50" 720p Plasma TV. It will produce a much superior image to any of the LCD's you are considering. In general, Plasma TV's will produce better pictures than most all LCD's 1080 or 720.

The most important aspect of a TV's image quality is contrast ratio. In this category, LCD's are awful, especially the no-name brands you are considering.

You can easily pick up a 50" Panasonic 720p set for $1300 - $1400 or so, occasionally even less.

There is no point in spec'ing 1080p, there is no broadcast content and there will not be as it is incompatible with US TV standards. Unless your gift recipient will sit less than 4 ft from the screen, they will never be able to see the difference between 720p and 1080p display even from a BluRay disc.


A very good reference for you to review would be the November Consumer Reports magazine. A well done assessment of the pro's and cons of LCD and Plasma TV's in this issue.

I just received this television. My first impression is great. I've been investigating diffrent brands and different models of LCD TV's for a while. Here is the conclusion I reached and the reasons for purchasing this TV:

* Sony has great models for over $2500. They have great picture but not great enough to compensate for the couple of thousand extra dollars paid. I saw 46XBR6 and 46V5100 next to each other in BB and did not see a significant difference except the price.
* Samsungs have great LCD TVs. But glossy screen would not work for me at all. I have a bright living room where my TV is located. So, if you will have your TV in a bright room, you probably would like to avoid glossy screens like Samsung has. It really reflects a lot almost like a mirror. This was a big deal for me.

Now, my experice with KDL46V5100 is as follows:
It has great picture quality. I did not expect it to be so good at even SD. It is very easy to use. We plugged the TV and started to use it right away. Even user's manual is just a few pages. Before buying the TV I paid extra attention to the wide angle performance. This TV has about the same view from front and from sides: no changes in color or image quality with angle that I recognized.

I am extremely satisfied with the Amazon delivery. They brought the TV, unpacked it and installed the TV on the stand.

Good TV for good price and good service from Amazon...

I recently purchased the Sony Bravia 46V5100, and wow is all i can say. This is my first HD anything purchase, although i did a ton of research for over a year, im glad i chose this Sony. I also promptly purchased the playstation 3 for the games and blu-ray, along with the HD package from the cable company, and it blows me away. The picture never blurs or anything like that, im a huge NASCAR fan and there is no blurring, no skipping and you never miss a bit of the action, and of course its the fastest sport on TV. With all the HDMI inputs, i dont know what else i can put in there to make it better, theres more than enough room for all the accessories. The screen is what made the difference for me between this Sony and the Samsung of the equivilant. The screen is not as glossy as the samsung, although the bezel is as shiny as the rest, you hardly notice it. The white glove delivery was great, i was notified of every step of the journey for my TV, the delivery guys unloaded it, ops checked it and explained some of the features. The only problem was a "feature" that came with the TV that darkens the screen during dark scenes on a movie or TV show, this problem has been fixed by a software update, found on the Sony support web site. its a very easy fix, just requiring an USB memory stick, or if you dont have one the Sony people will send you one. The update just takes minutes and makes a world of difference. I was a bit nervous about buying a TV online, but i went and checked it out at best buy, and it was about $400 less at amazon than at best buy, so my decision was made for me. Over all its a great tv, and a great price for the size of the TV. Thanks

I researched 46 inch lcd tv's for months, and every site recommended the Samsung 550, so I bought it. I'm not a techie, so I'll just say this: the speakers on all Samsungs are on the bottom of the set, so unless you know how to hook it up to an external sound system, every show will sound like you're inside a tin can with the lid closed. I sent it back and got the Sony, which is a VAST improvement; the speakers are on the front of the set, where they belong. The picture is sharp, colors saturated and beautiful, it's easy to navigate. It's a great TV. Unlike the Samsung, which is incredibly shiny and reflective, the Sony even looks great in my living room. I love it!

How long is the power cord for the Toshiba REGZA Cinema Series 42XV545U HDTV?

Q. I want to see what options I will have for placement.

A. Although this is a brand new LCD without many if any specific public reviews, I went for the Toshiba for a number of reasons including perceived product reliability, feature set and value for money. I actively compared the Sony 40Z4100 and Samsung LNT750 which have both been on the market for several months, are highly rated to the Toshiba 46 (not 42) inch Regza XV545U. At the end of the day the Toshiba had it all even though I read some comments about lower contrast on other models I can tell you that I perceive no real issues even though the unit is installed in a very dark room. I have not calibrated the set but DVDs look great in cinema mode, even VCR tapes are acceptable. The SRT seems to be a real bonus and I will NOT buy a Blu-Ray player as a result. Set-up was extremely easy and I was able to do it all by my lonesome, essentially plug and play into a full A/V system, the remote is programmable for all my gizmos from a B&K AVR through Sony DvD and SAT box. You get the added bennies of 5:5 pull down and 120 hz. DVDs really look goood with no judder that I could tell. One gripe: the remote does not have an illumination button which would be nice in a dark environment. I ruled out the Sony because of some bad personal Sony product experiences including TVs. Although I always liked what I consider a very natural Sony picture image I've read about some backlighting and clouding issues on the LCDs and you pay the Sony premium price. As for the Samsung, I did not want a glossy screen due to too much glare and what i can only say are horror stories I read about customer service same with Sony (hopefully not with Toshiba).

I got the set from JandR. They were very accomodating and very communicative throughout the order process. They delayed my shipment at my request and held as well as improved the price up to the time of shipment. The box shipped UPS and arrived without damage on the day promised with some added packaging inside. I would definitely buy again from them.

What type of cord do I need to hook my PC up to my LCD HDTV with a PC Input?

Did anyone else buy the Polaroid '42 lcd TV that was on the front page of the WalMart Black Friday ad?

Q. I got it buy I'm having trouble finding any reviews of it. There's one guy on Amazon that hates it. And the few consumer review sites I found said that for the money it's a good buy for a mid level TV. For $798, I feel I got a good deal, but I'd like to find out what others think, and where they keep their TV settings at.

A. sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this tv isnt very good. this is not a mid level hdtv is is a low level hdtv. a good deal for the money? yes. is it worth it? no. polaroid make good cameras. thats it. their tvs are crap. they are cheap, have poor picture quality and use very cheap parts. also there is no fixing these tvs. they are a throw away tv. so i hope you pray this tv doesnt have any problems. you could have spent as little as an extra $200 and gotten a great name brand tv with much better quality and reliability. i personally think you should return it and get a better name brand one. believe me you really get what you pay for in hdtvs. get a brand like panasonic, sony, toshiba, sharp, samsung, lg. yes yes i know they are more money, but it will be well worthit. these are tier 1 or high level of quality tvs. you can even get a tier 2 or mid level hdtv like an olevia that will be a heck of alot better than that polaroid. im not trying to be rude at all. this is just my experience talking. so good luck.

A. I suggest that you look at flat panel televisions that are high definition (HDTV); Sandy Sue. There are many brands and 3 types of flat screens to choose from; Plasma screens, LED, or LCD.

Most of the brands of HDTV flat screens will work well; so shop around for price. Do a little research online; and then go into a store and check out the brands that interest you. Look at the tv straight on and from the side, to see which picture looks best. Compare the colors and clearness of the pictures.

The size of the screen will depend on the size of the room where the tv will be placed. We have two tvs, one has a 42 inch screen and one has a 48 inch screen; the rooms are about 10x14 feet. We could have gone with bigger screens, but honestly, these screens are more than big enough. If your rooms are smaller, then you could get a smaller screen.

Our 42 inch flat panel screen HDTV is an LED screen, Samsung. The picture is clear and sharp and the color is good. We can view it from the side without a problem. The screen burnt out after 2 years, and we were able to replace it, but it cost a pretty penny. The tv is now 6 years old and works like a champ.

We've had our 48 inch flat panel screen HDTV for about 18 months; it is an LCD screen and is the LG brand. I love this tv, it does use less energy and doesn't get as hot as any of our other televisions. The picture is great and we have not had any problems with it at all.

Just look for a picture that you like, a size that you like, a price that you can afford, and check reviews of the tv you are considering. I know that the choices are dizzying. We did a bit of research, went to the stores more than once, picked the televisions we liked the best, and then waited for them to go on sale.

Which HD FTA receiver do you suggest?

Q. I have a sonicview4000 right now on a old crt tv. I'm planning on buying a 720p LCD around 42 inches. So, i'm thinking of upgrading the receiver. Are there any suggestions? Any sites I can look at reviews? What are the price ranges? What can I do with my old receiver. Would I have to adjust anything with the dish or lnbs?

A. I have heard great things about the Viewsat 9000 HD. All HD units are still pretty expensive but if you're stuck with a coolsat 4000-6000 or any other receiver that has discontinued or intermittent support, now is as good a time as any to buy. I would not buy coolsat again, it was down for 6 months a year and a half ago while viewsat had working bins and coolsat has recently decided to quit support for many of their popular yet older models.
As for the TV I would get a Samsung DLP 1080p HDTV of any size, they are a digital light projection TV and have the best picture quality from what I've seen for the price.
I think you do need an HD compatible dish but im not very sure. I would keep your old reciever around just as a backup or for a second TV in the house.

A. Although this is a brand new LCD without many if any specific public reviews, I went for the Toshiba for a number of reasons including perceived product reliability, feature set and value for money. I actively compared the Sony 40Z4100 and Samsung LNT750 which have both been on the market for several months, are highly rated to the Toshiba 46 (not 42) inch Regza XV545U. At the end of the day the Toshiba had it all even though I read some comments about lower contrast on other models I can tell you that I perceive no real issues even though the unit is installed in a very dark room. I have not calibrated the set but DVDs look great in cinema mode, even VCR tapes are acceptable. The SRT seems to be a real bonus and I will NOT buy a Blu-Ray player as a result. Set-up was extremely easy and I was able to do it all by my lonesome, essentially plug and play into a full A/V system, the remote is programmable for all my gizmos from a B&K AVR through Sony DvD and SAT box. You get the added bennies of 5:5 pull down and 120 hz. DVDs really look goood with no judder that I could tell. One gripe: the remote does not have an illumination button which would be nice in a dark environment. I ruled out the Sony because of some bad personal Sony product experiences including TVs. Although I always liked what I consider a very natural Sony picture image I've read about some backlighting and clouding issues on the LCDs and you pay the Sony premium price. As for the Samsung, I did not want a glossy screen due to too much glare and what i can only say are horror stories I read about customer service same with Sony (hopefully not with Toshiba).

I got the set from JandR. They were very accomodating and very communicative throughout the order process. They delayed my shipment at my request and held as well as improved the price up to the time of shipment. The box shipped UPS and arrived without damage on the day promised with some added packaging inside. I would definitely buy again from them.

What type of cord do I need to hook my PC up to my LCD HDTV with a PC Input?

Q. I just bought a LG LCD 42" HDTV. It has a PC Input, but I am unsure of what type of cord/wire i need to purchase to hook it up to my Dell Desktop computer (with USB ports, etc.)... any help is appreciated! I want to be able to watch my netflix movies on my TV instead of on my 15 inch monitor... thanks :-)

A. I just bought an LG LCD 42" HD TV too!...It will be delivered this weekend...Let me know what you think of your set - color, blacks, sound,etc. Model 42LG30.
I have read some reviews that say that it is good for movies but that lettering is not as good as on a PC.

What is the best store to buy electronics?

Q. I'm looking for a good Sony flat panel tv. I want quality over price but yet want the price to be fair (I'm not worrying about budget right now, I'll worry about that later lol)

Which is the best electronics store to buy tv's and any other types of electronics? (ie: best buy, circuit city, sears, etc) and WHY?

A. First you should go to a store like Best Buy, Circuit City, or even Costco to see what TV you like best for the prices they're offering. Watch the TVs (they should all have the same programming on) and see which picture you like best. Ask the sales people questions about the different specs you see listed (resolution, progressive or interlaced scanning, 60 or 120-Hz video refresh rate, contrast ratio, etc.) and ask why some models are more expensive than others. That way you'll know why the TVs are priced the way they are and which features are important to you (would you want to spend an extra $300 on a TV because it has a feature that you wouldn't use or don't notice in the picture?). Write down the model numbers of the ones you like.

Then check prices on the internet. I recommend buying on-line, because not only can you sometimes get a better price, but you might avoid sales tax and shipping.

You can use whatever shopping bot you want to search on the item and see which on-line stores offer the item at what price. But, when you see the prices and the stores offering them for a certain model, go to www.resellerratings.com/store/ and enter the name of the store in the upper right corner of the page to get a list of consumer ratings for that store. This site only has ratings from actual customers. They don't let stores enter their own bogus positive ratings (if you try to rate a company, they require an invoice number and contact info for the store, so they can verify that you're actually a customer).

If the store doesn't come up as part of the search, it hasn't been rated yet and may not be worth the risk of going through them. But, if the searched store does come up, you'll get a bunch of customer reviews - positive and negative - that will help you decide if you should take the risk with this on-line store.

I bought a 42" Sony LCD HDTV a couple years ago and the lowest price at the time was about $1650. When I looked up the store selling it at that price, most of the reviews told about how they pressure you to get the $300 - $500 extended warranty. And, when you don't get that, they charge your credit card, but tell you that your item is on backorder. Most people said they just cancelled the order after 3 months or whatever, because of being in backorder limbo for months.

I did find a store selling the TV for $1850. It was at egghead.com, which is a very reputable on-line store. They charged me California sales tax, because the TV was coming from a warehouse in Los Angeles. But, shipping was free. And, the TV arrived safe and sound within 2 days.

Seniors I'm thinking of buying a new TV. What brands do you think are good and what sizes?

A. I suggest that you look at flat panel televisions that are high definition (HDTV); Sandy Sue. There are many brands and 3 types of flat screens to choose from; Plasma screens, LED, or LCD.

Most of the brands of HDTV flat screens will work well; so shop around for price. Do a little research online; and then go into a store and check out the brands that interest you. Look at the tv straight on and from the side, to see which picture looks best. Compare the colors and clearness of the pictures.

The size of the screen will depend on the size of the room where the tv will be placed. We have two tvs, one has a 42 inch screen and one has a 48 inch screen; the rooms are about 10x14 feet. We could have gone with bigger screens, but honestly, these screens are more than big enough. If your rooms are smaller, then you could get a smaller screen.

Our 42 inch flat panel screen HDTV is an LED screen, Samsung. The picture is clear and sharp and the color is good. We can view it from the side without a problem. The screen burnt out after 2 years, and we were able to replace it, but it cost a pretty penny. The tv is now 6 years old and works like a champ.

We've had our 48 inch flat panel screen HDTV for about 18 months; it is an LCD screen and is the LG brand. I love this tv, it does use less energy and doesn't get as hot as any of our other televisions. The picture is great and we have not had any problems with it at all.

Just look for a picture that you like, a size that you like, a price that you can afford, and check reviews of the tv you are considering. I know that the choices are dizzying. We did a bit of research, went to the stores more than once, picked the televisions we liked the best, and then waited for them to go on sale.

What would be an average sizes plasma or lcd tv for a master bedroom?

Q. We are looking at either 32, 37 or 42 inch plasma or lcd tv's. Normally we watch tv at night so which type of tv would have a better picture quality at night. Can anyone recommend some good models?

A. Plasmas are better for night viewing than LCDs.

The size to get depends on the viewing distance and the programming types. If you are going to be watching mostly HDTV programming, you can be as close as 2 times the screen measurement away (so, for a 42-incher, you don't want it any closer than 7 feet away from your viewing spot).

If you watch a lot of standard definition, you probably want a smaller screen or want to have it a bit further back, so that it is at least 2.5 or 3 times the screen dimension away.

Plasmas generally don't come any smaller than 42 inches. If 42 inches is right for you, among the top choices among reviewers right now are the Samsung HPT4254 / 4264 and the Panasonic 42px75 / px77. Check reviews at CNET below.

Did anyone else buy the Polaroid '42 lcd TV that was on the front page of the WalMart Black Friday ad?

Q. I got it buy I'm having trouble finding any reviews of it. There's one guy on Amazon that hates it. And the few consumer review sites I found said that for the money it's a good buy for a mid level TV. For $798, I feel I got a good deal, but I'd like to find out what others think, and where they keep their TV settings at.

A. sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this tv isnt very good. this is not a mid level hdtv is is a low level hdtv. a good deal for the money? yes. is it worth it? no. polaroid make good cameras. thats it. their tvs are crap. they are cheap, have poor picture quality and use very cheap parts. also there is no fixing these tvs. they are a throw away tv. so i hope you pray this tv doesnt have any problems. you could have spent as little as an extra $200 and gotten a great name brand tv with much better quality and reliability. i personally think you should return it and get a better name brand one. believe me you really get what you pay for in hdtvs. get a brand like panasonic, sony, toshiba, sharp, samsung, lg. yes yes i know they are more money, but it will be well worthit. these are tier 1 or high level of quality tvs. you can even get a tier 2 or mid level hdtv like an olevia that will be a heck of alot better than that polaroid. im not trying to be rude at all. this is just my experience talking. so good luck.
