For a slim TV that uses less power, get an LED....If you buy an LED or LCD, (they are very similar) get one with 120 hz. refresh rate, to help minimize the blur on fast motion..! I know LCD is bad to view at angles, and that plasmas burn out. Picture quality doesn't mean everything to me, I just don't want it to get any lines or dead pixels.

A. Plasma is NOT dead!!! Good lord. You need to do some research.

Okay, here is the short spill. Plasma STILL has the best contrast ratio when it comes to the darkest darks. LED still cannot match a plasma for deep blacks. Plasma TV's are still good but do run hotter than LED or LCD and draw more power than LED or LCD> Plasmas have the best refresh rate out of them also.

LED is the second best and will eventually replace Plasma in the future. Some new LED TVs have local dimming making the blacks appear better than they ever have on an LCD or LED screen still not as good as plasma. LED tvs tend to be a little sharper (depending on the specific set) than any others. LED draws the least amount of power and are the lightest and thinnest TVs on the market. LED will cost the most though out of any other TVs. oh, Plasma can have burn in if you leave an image up for several hours BUT most new plasma sets have a way of erasing it or not letting it happen by moving pixels around.

LCD costs are way down and still have a decent picture. LCD TVs are usually thicker than LED ones and use a bit more power than LED but nothing near as much as Plasma. LCDs do not get burnin at all unless you leave an image up for like months at a time... you may have pixels that burn out.

hope you get all what i was saying. I happen to own all three and i can say my plasma still is king for over-all picture quality although not as bright as my new LG LED 3D HDTV. Hope that helps!

A. I've done some research on LCD vs Plasma vs DLP and here are my results:

Plasma:
Generally better home-theater image quality than LCD; wide viewing angles; superior motion resolution (which means you do not see blurs in fast-action movies/tv shows/etc.).
Bulkier and less energy-efficient than LCDs; sometimes lower native resolution than similarly sized LCDs; glass screens can reflect ambient light.
The best plasmas produce top-notch image quality, with deep black levels, excellent color, wide viewing angles, and better motion resolution than similar LCDs, making them subject to less blurring during fast movement.
Most plasma makers today claim a life span of 60,000 hours before the panel fades to half brightness. That's more than 20 years if the TV is on for 8 hours per day.
Things to watch out for: Burn in, Glare, get a model with with good black-level performance (Contrast ratios),

LCD:
One definite advantage of LCD TVs, is that their matte plastic screens reflect less ambient light than plasmas' glass, so they're usually better for very bright rooms with little light control. Note that some LCDs have glossy screens, as opposed to matte (glossy = not so good in light rooms).
Sleeker, weighs less, and more energy efficient than Plasma (but sleeker is a relative term since plasmas are slim)
PC Connections are more common on LCDs than Plasma
Same life expectancy as Plasma


DLP:
Less-expensive at very large screen sizes than plasma; good black-level performance on the best models.
Lamp requires periodic replacement; thicker and bulkier than flat-panels; less-impressive off-angle performance than plasma.
Can produce soft edges on picture quality (not good)
Easy to replace light bulb (which lasts only 3000 hrs)
Picture Quality does not fade over time as Plasma and LCD

Winner: That depends on how it is used. For me, Plasma dominates the rest because the TV is mainly used to watch movies in a dark room.

Q. I don't have HD programming hooked up, so I am only going to be watching blu-ray movies and playing games on either xbox 360 or PS3. I may have an antenna hooked up for over the air broadcast HD channels. So I wasn't sure if an LCD or Plasma would be better. I am looking for 42-46" TV. Also should I get 60hz or 120hz TV, is there much of a difference?

A. 40" - 46" is the kind of grey area size. Below that you want a basic LCD. Above that you definitely want a Plasma (or if you must go LCD, LED LCD). But in that range both can potentially get the job done.

Same with the 60Hz vs 120Hz options. Gamers would most likely all tell you to go 120Hz. But again, at those sizes, its still a grey area. It will definitely make a difference, but enough that you'll notice or enough that it warrants the added cost? That's where its into the grey.

For both, LCD vs Plasma, or 60Hz vs 120Hz, I highly recommend you go to a store and use your eyes. Everyone's visual sensitivities are different. If you can see differences, then go with the one that you think is giving you the best picture (make sure they hook up a game for you if that's going to be your main use). If they all look the same to you, go for the cheapest.

But do stick with the big name brands. Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung are your main friends. They are the leaders of the pack. But Sharp, LG, and Toshiba also make viable options for your to consider as well. But that's it, other than those 6, you're looking at 2nd tier brands that will be a risk. They might work out, but the risk is much greater.

Personally, I would hands down go with a Panasonic Viera plasma for your needs. It will be wicked for gaming and movies. Its the top of the line manufacturer with one of the single best reputations for reliability. Plasma has a near instantaneous response time (0.001ms) and so is flawless in fast motion playback (LCDs are typically in around 4ms - 8ms, the 120Hz can help overcome that, but its not Plasma good).

Plasma haters will claim burn-in. But a modern Plasma doesn't suffer that anymore. Especially one from Panasonic. Though a cautious person would recommend you still condition a Plasma TV. So that means no gaming for the first 20-50 hours of operation (watch a lot of movies really quickly). And for the first 100-200 hours of operation keep the brightness and contrast cranked down (so probably stay away from games with dark scenes during that time as well, as they'll be hard to play). But after that, optimize it and know that you're getting as good as it gets in HDTVs.

What you should be looking for is a TV with high native contrast ratios and fast response times and/or refresh rates. These categories insure the best picture quality. Plasma TV's have the best numbers in all of these categories! They have the highest native contrast ratio(40,000:1) with Infinite dynamic black levels or Infinite dynamic contrast ratio! They have near instant response time(.001ms) and super fast refresh rates(600hz)! This insures that they maintain the sharpest pic possible with fast motion content like sports, movies & gaming!

The best brands of Plasma are: Pioneer, Panasonic & Samsung. Stay away from anything else! Pioneers are the best of the best but expensive! Panasonic's are just as good as Pioneers, but much more affordable. Samsung's come close to Panasonics, but lack their reliability(but not by much)!

Q. Im thinking of replacing my old crt rptv hdtv. with a flat screen tv. they say Plasma have the best picture but they do use a lot of power and can have burn in.

A. Because they are phosphor-based sets, meaning that they are able to give instantaneous response time, very high contrast, deep blacks, and accurate colors, just like their CRT cousins. As an added plus, they can be built with high resolutions at large screen sizes. They also have wide viewing angles, unlike LCD TVs.

LEDs come close, but still cannot quite match the contrast and black levels of plasma. They also still have narrower viewing angles and slower response.

Plasmas in general do use more power, but most newer models are pretty energy-efficient, Energy-star rated and all. In addition, it won't make much of a difference on the electric bill when you compare to things that really do use a lot of electricity, like furnaces and air conditioning. Plasmas are more likely to burn in than CRT or LCD TVs, but new sets from good brands like Panasonic, LG, and Samsung incorporate technology make this less likely.

What kind of TV do i need to play xbox 360 where I can see texts clearer?

Q. I'm currently playing with a standard TV. I'm a little confused if it is really an HDTV you need. What are the differences between HDTV, LED, plasma etc?

What kind of HDTV is better: Plasma, LCD , LED, etc.?

Q. I want to buy an 40" - 46" HDTV (1080p) for my home to replace my 10 year old 40 " CRT TV. I've seen different types out there: Plasma, LED. LCD. What's the difference and which is considered best (quality-wise). Any references to links that explain the different types of TVs on the market now. I'm just now able to afford getting into 21st century technology and would like some help.

After all, there are so many acronyms and buzzwords to wrap your head around, such as 1080p, 120/240Hz, 24p, HDMI and LED backlighting. Huh?

Along with deciding how big a screen you want (which is usually tied to the size of your budget and the dimensions of your room), the next choice should be between LCD.LCD (LED Backlit) or Plasma � and all have their merits. Here, we'll describe each of these formats, and also point out their shortcomings.

What is it?

Some newer LCD TVs, however, use LED-backlighting instead. LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, translate to a better-looking picture (see photo).

Pros
There are a number of advantages to buying a LCD televisions. For one, with more than three-quarters of all televisions embracing this technology, there is a lot of choice when it comes to manufacturers, models and sizes (13- to 103-inches, in fact). Competition, of course, breeds more aggressive pricing, too, which is good news for the consumer.

Flat-panel LCD televisions are also very thin, light and energy efficient, and are ideal for rooms with plenty of ambient light, which, for example, comes through large windows as they tend to absorb rather than reflect light (reflected light can obscure your view of the screen).

Cons
Until recently, LCD TVs didn't handle fast motion images as well as plasma TVs, resulting in a somewhat blurred image. Newer LCD TVs, though, have added technologies such as 120Hz frame doubling (or 240Hz frame quadrupling) to smooth out motion. It's still not as good as plasma, but much better than before. Also, LCD TVs used to have problems showing dark blacks (because a light was still on behind the pixel showing black, resulting in a more greyish hue). Many LCD televisions today use local-dimming with LED-backlighting (see next section) for improved contrast ratios (whiter whites and blacker blacks) - but, keep in mind, this is not an issue associated with plasma TVs.

Typically, manufacturers claim an efficiency improvement of up to 30 percent over fluorescent-based sets, which can add up significantly over the lifetime of a TV, especially on larger screens that use more juice to begin with.

LEDs are also much smaller than tubes, even after accounting for the number of them needed to light an entire TV. That means LED-backlit televisions can be manufactured significantly thinner than their tube cousins. For instance, most of the ultra-thin televisions that measured under an inch thick at CES used LED backlights, because they add very little depth to the profile. Though commercial variants aren�t quite as dramatically thin as these prototypes, they�re significantly skinnier than their fluorescent-backlit counterparts, making them some of the most chic and living-room-friendly HDTVs out there.

Q. I'm looking to buy a new tv and i was wanting to know best brand, best type (LCD, Plasma, LED, etc..) and best value.
I am also look for something under $2000.
And what all do I need to look for when buying?

A. Well i don't know what size you're looking for so i'm going to assume you're looking for sizes 42" or larger?!

What you should be looking for is a TV with high native contrast ratios and fast response times and/or refresh rates. These categories insure the best picture quality. Plasma TV's have the best numbers in all of these categories! They have the highest native contrast ratio(40,000:1) with Infinite dynamic black levels or Infinite dynamic contrast ratio! They have near instant response time(.001ms) and super fast refresh rates(600hz)! This insures that they maintain the sharpest pic possible with fast motion content like sports, movies & gaming!

The best brands of Plasma are: Pioneer, Panasonic & Samsung. Stay away from anything else! Pioneers are the best of the best but expensive! Panasonic's are just as good as Pioneers, but much more affordable. Samsung's come close to Panasonics, but lack their reliability(but not by much)!
