A. LED TV Technology is a relatively new feature in the world of HD Television. They are thinner and have a better definition display than typical LCD TVs that use fluorescent lamps as a light source. The hype surrounding this new technology has resulted in Samsung selling approx one million LED TVs worldwide in 6 months.
However LED televisions are not technically that different from conventional the LCD TVs that have been with us for the last few years. In fact the term �LED TV� has been questioned as an LED TV is just a liquid-crystal display TV that uses light-emitting diodes to light the screen. The plus points with these new sets are that they have better picture quality, are thinner and are more eco-friendly mainly due to reduced energy consumption. On the negative side, as is to be expected with any new technology their price tag is still a bit on the hefty side.

Q. I want to buy an 40" - 46" HDTV (1080p) for my home to replace my 10 year old 40 " CRT TV. I've seen different types out there: Plasma, LED. LCD. What's the difference and which is considered best (quality-wise). Any references to links that explain the different types of TVs on the market now. I'm just now able to afford getting into 21st century technology and would like some help.

After all, there are so many acronyms and buzzwords to wrap your head around, such as 1080p, 120/240Hz, 24p, HDMI and LED backlighting. Huh?

Along with deciding how big a screen you want (which is usually tied to the size of your budget and the dimensions of your room), the next choice should be between LCD.LCD (LED Backlit) or Plasma � and all have their merits. Here, we'll describe each of these formats, and also point out their shortcomings.

LCD

What is it?
lcd tv 120mhzSimilar to your laptop computer's monitor, flat-panel LCD televisions use a liquid crystal display to produce a sharp and bright picture; these crystals are sandwiched between two panes of polarized glass, which are stimulated by an electric current and illuminated by fluorescent tubes housed behind the glass. Some newer LCD TVs, however, use LED-backlighting instead. LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, translate to a better-looking picture (see photo).

Pros
There are a number of advantages to buying a LCD televisions. For one, with more than three-quarters of all televisions embracing this technology, there is a lot of choice when it comes to manufacturers, models and sizes (13- to 103-inches, in fact). Competition, of course, breeds more aggressive pricing, too, which is good news for the consumer.

Flat-panel LCD televisions are also very thin, light and energy efficient, and are ideal for rooms with plenty of ambient light, which, for example, comes through large windows as they tend to absorb rather than reflect light (reflected light can obscure your view of the screen).

Cons
Until recently, LCD TVs didn't handle fast motion images as well as plasma TVs, resulting in a somewhat blurred image. Newer LCD TVs, though, have added technologies such as 120Hz frame doubling (or 240Hz frame quadrupling) to smooth out motion. It's still not as good as plasma, but much better than before. Also, LCD TVs used to have problems showing dark blacks (because a light was still on behind the pixel showing black, resulting in a more greyish hue). Many LCD televisions today use local-dimming with LED-backlighting (see next section) for improved contrast ratios (whiter whites and blacker blacks) - but, keep in mind, this is not an issue associated with plasma TVs.

What is it? Not a Different Type of TV

The proper term would really be "LED-backlit LCD TV," but that always seems to get truncated to "LED TV" in everyday conversation, perpetuating the confusion.

To understand how LEDs function in an LCD TV, think of an actual liquid-crystal panel as the plastic pegs in a Lite Brite. They hold a translucent image, but without a powerful backlight to punch through and light it up like a signboard, you�re not going to see much. On your old Lite Bright, an inefficient incandescent light did the job, but pretty unevenly. On a typical LCD TV, fluorescent lights provide the backlighting through a special plastic sheet called a light guide that distributes light from a fluorescent tube evenly over the surface of the TV. On an LED-backlit TV, fluorescent tubes are replaced with light-emitting diodes � LEDs � the same technology that probably lights up your digital watch, the buttons on your monitor, and the indicators on your stereo. They can be either situated along the edges of the TV like a fluorescent tube, or arranged directly behind the screen in a grid. But what difference does it make, and why would anyone spend so much money on it?

The Benefit of LEDs

The most obvious reason LEDs have fallen into favor in LCD TVs: they�re simply more efficient. Although fluorescent lights do a decent job converting electricity to light in the big scale of things, LEDs perform even better. Typically, manufacturers claim an efficiency improvement of up to 30 percent over fluorescent-based sets, which can add up significantly over the lifetime of a TV, especially on larger screens that use more juice to begin with.

LEDs are also much smaller than tubes, even after accounting for the number of them needed to light an entire TV. That means LED-backlit televisions can be manufactured significantly thinner than their tube cousins. For instance, most of the ultra-thin televisions that measured under an inch thick at CES used LED backlights, because they add very little depth to the profile. Though commercial variants aren�t quite as dramatically thin as these prototypes, they�re significantly skinnier than their fluorescent-backlit counterparts, making them some of the most chic and living-room-friendly HDTVs out there.

HDTV for video games?

Q. I haven't been able to find the lag rate for TV's so i figured I'd just ask you guys. I'm getting really really antsy, i haven't had a tv for months and im tempted to buy the LG 42LV4400 42-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED-LCD.... http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005JK01GO?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER
Does anyone have it, and can they vouch for gaming experience with it (sound,visuals, lag).

A 46in Samsung LED for $800 was my ideal and after missing this deal (http://dealnews.com/Samsung-46-120-Hz-1080-p-LED-Backlit-LCD-HDTV-for-800-free-shipping-/470443.html#similar) I've been trying to hold out for it again but I'm not sure if I'm gonna make it much longer

Sony Bravia LCD HDTV 1080p a good choice?

Q. I recently bought this Tv and i love it but i heard Plasmas are better. Whats the difference? I mainly use it for gaming but was this a good choice over a Plasma?

A. Of course it's a great TV...it's a Sony! We have a KDL55EX710 LED backlit LCD and my son plays his PS3 games without a hitch. The main gripe I have with plasmas is that they suffer from burn in, just like CRT's did back in the 70's with the Pong video game. I've noticed this especially if you watch 4:3 format programs with the vertical black bars...they get burned in. You won't have this with an LCD display. Plus, LCD runs much cooler and uses less energy than plasma, and will inherently last longer.


What is the difference between an LCD and LED HDTV?
Q.

A. There are many technologies emerging in display devices like TVs. Every technology excels in particular feature of display and has particular method of display. Different technologies used in TVs are:

LCD TV:
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) televisions are thinner and lighter and provide much sharper and clearer picture than CRTs of similar size. They are ideally used for cell phone displays, computer monitors, and to view still images.
· LCD TVs have a flat screen so there will be no picture distortion and don't have screen "burn in" like curved tube TVs.
· In general, LCD viewing angle is 175 degrees. The picture can be viewed 87 degrees from each side.
· LCD TVs are very economical to use and screens less than 35 are fairly inexpensive.
· LCD TVs are backlit and blocks outside light. So, they are suitable for natural lighting situations.
· Most LCD TVs have a half lifespan (50% of original brightness) of over 30,000 hours (16 years of viewing at 6 hours per day).
LCD sizes generally range from 13 to 65 but some manufacturer will offer up to 100 sizes.

Plasma TV:
A Plasma Display Panel (PDP) is a flat panel display used in large TV displays. They have better and accurate color generation than LCDs, and with far display, wider viewing angles, and do not experience degradation at high angles compared to LCD. Plasma displays are ideal for viewing motion video in large displays.

· Plasma screen sizes generally ranges from 32 to 84 but some offer screen sizes up to 100.
· Plasma pixel, technology provides a brighter picture with more contrast between the blacks and whites than standard TV.
· In general, plasma TVs viewing angle is 160 to 180 degrees and picture can be viewed from any angle.
· On an average, Plasma TVs have a half lifespan (50% of brightness) of 50,000 to 70,000 hours (20 years of viewing 6 hours a day to 50,000 hours).
Some plasma TVs are provided with upgradeable video cards that helps to match with future technology.

HDTV:
HDTV or High-Definition Television is a digital television broadcasting system offering a higher resolution compared to regular television systems. HDTV is digitally broadcast unlike earlier analog broadcasting, because digital television (DTV) signals require reduced bandwidth because of digital video compression.

HDTV will not have standard TV problems, like low quality sharpness, troubles with brightness or contrast, spots, other visual, or audio imperfections, problems like double images (ghosting), and weak signals. HD television provides clearer pictures with excellent sound quality, a wider viewing screen and up-to-date scanning. HDTV will provide more and superior channels provided by regular satellite or cable television with theater system experience.

LED TV:
LED (Light Emitting Diode) TV is an LCD TV that uses LEDs for back lighting, instead of using the fluorescent lights (as it creates more black spots). They are ideally used for low-energy indicators, as substitutes for traditional light sources in general lighting and automotive lighting.
· LED TV currently costs more than a standard LCD or plasma TV.
· LED TV has got great looks and very easy to Install.
· Edge-lit LED television will consume 30-40% of less power than LCD or plasma TV. But backlit LEDs will consume more power.
· Brighter picture can be viewed with LED television compared to a standard LCD TV.
· LED TV that is backlit, with local dimming and RGB LEDs, will have an enhanced picture and better contrast ratio and colour accuracy compared to standard LCD TV.
It has a long lasting life and also eco friendly.

OLED TVs:
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs depend on light emitting polymer technology. Its features including,
· In OLED TVs, there is no need for backlights or extra heaters or coolers, so there is less power consumption.
· As OLED materials has the capacity to support full spectrum of visible light, so there will be higher contrast and it has high-speed refresh rates.
· OLEDs are much faster than LCDs. Fast motion and quick eye movement pictures are more realistic. And OLED TVs will make virtual images to look realistic and can be viewed easily for longer periods.
· It has larger viewing angle and for near-eye applications, it provides more pleasant viewing without distortion.
One disadvantage with OLED TVs is the limited lifespan of the organic materials used in its manufacturing. In addition, blue light degrades quickly with a lifespan of 14,000 hours (when used 8 hours per day for five years) on flat-panel displays.

Before purchasing a television, know the difference between each technology and purchase the one, which has your desired features and suits your budget.

Along with deciding how big a screen you want (which is usually tied to the size of your budget and the dimensions of your room), the next choice should be between LCD.LCD (LED Backlit) or Plasma � and all have their merits. Here, we'll describe each of these formats, and also point out their shortcomings.

LCD

What is it?

Some newer LCD TVs, however, use LED-backlighting instead. LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, translate to a better-looking picture (see photo).

Pros
There are a number of advantages to buying a LCD televisions. For one, with more than three-quarters of all televisions embracing this technology, there is a lot of choice when it comes to manufacturers, models and sizes (13- to 103-inches, in fact). Competition, of course, breeds more aggressive pricing, too, which is good news for the consumer.

Flat-panel LCD televisions are also very thin, light and energy efficient, and are ideal for rooms with plenty of ambient light, which, for example, comes through large windows as they tend to absorb rather than reflect light (reflected light can obscure your view of the screen).

Cons
Until recently, LCD TVs didn't handle fast motion images as well as plasma TVs, resulting in a somewhat blurred image. Newer LCD TVs, though, have added technologies such as 120Hz frame doubling (or 240Hz frame quadrupling) to smooth out motion. It's still not as good as plasma, but much better than before. Also, LCD TVs used to have problems showing dark blacks (because a light was still on behind the pixel showing black, resulting in a more greyish hue). Many LCD televisions today use local-dimming with LED-backlighting (see next section) for improved contrast ratios (whiter whites and blacker blacks) - but, keep in mind, this is not an issue associated with plasma TVs.

What is it? Not a Different Type of TV

The proper term would really be "LED-backlit LCD TV," but that always seems to get truncated to "LED TV" in everyday conversation, perpetuating the confusion.

To understand how LEDs function in an LCD TV, think of an actual liquid-crystal panel as the plastic pegs in a Lite Brite. They hold a translucent image, but without a powerful backlight to punch through and light it up like a signboard, you�re not going to see much. On your old Lite Bright, an inefficient incandescent light did the job, but pretty unevenly. On a typical LCD TV, fluorescent lights provide the backlighting through a special plastic sheet called a light guide that distributes light from a fluorescent tube evenly over the surface of the TV. On an LED-backlit TV, fluorescent tubes are replaced with light-emitting diodes � LEDs � the same technology that probably lights up your digital watch, the buttons on your monitor, and the indicators on your stereo. The Benefit of LEDs

The most obvious reason LEDs have fallen into favor in LCD TVs: they�re simply more efficient. Although fluorescent lights do a decent job converting electricity to light in the big scale of things, LEDs perform even better. Typically, manufacturers claim an efficiency improvement of up to 30 percent over fluorescent-based sets, which can add up significantly over the lifetime of a TV, especially on larger screens that use more juice to begin with.

LEDs are also much smaller than tubes, even after accounting for the number of them needed to light an entire TV. That means LED-backlit televisions can be manufactured significantly thinner than their tube cousins. For instance, most of the ultra-thin televisions that measured under an inch thick at CES used LED backlights, because they add very little depth to the profile. Though commercial variants aren�t quite as dramatically thin as these prototypes, they�re significantly skinnier than their fluorescent-backlit counterparts, making them some of the most chic and living-room-friendly HDTVs out there.

A. There are many technologies emerging in display devices like TVs. Every technology excels in particular feature of display and has particular method of display. Different technologies used in TVs are:

LCD TV:
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) televisions are thinner and lighter and provide much sharper and clearer picture than CRTs of similar size. They are ideally used for cell phone displays, computer monitors, and to view still images.

LCD sizes generally range from 13 to 65 but some manufacturer will offer up to 100 sizes.

Plasma TV:
A Plasma Display Panel (PDP) is a flat panel display used in large TV displays. They have better and accurate color generation than LCDs, and with far display, wider viewing angles, and do not experience degradation at high angles compared to LCD. Plasma displays are ideal for viewing motion video in large displays.

· Plasma screen sizes generally ranges from 32 to 84 but some offer screen sizes up to 100.
· Plasma pixel, technology provides a brighter picture with more contrast between the blacks and whites than standard TV.
· In general, plasma TVs viewing angle is 160 to 180 degrees and picture can be viewed from any angle.
· On an average, Plasma TVs have a half lifespan (50% of brightness) of 50,000 to 70,000 hours (20 years of viewing 6 hours a day to 50,000 hours).
Some plasma TVs are provided with upgradeable video cards that helps to match with future technology.

HDTV:
HDTV or High-Definition Television is a digital television broadcasting system offering a higher resolution compared to regular television systems. HDTV is digitally broadcast unlike earlier analog broadcasting, because digital television (DTV) signals require reduced bandwidth because of digital video compression.

HDTV will not have standard TV problems, like low quality sharpness, troubles with brightness or contrast, spots, other visual, or audio imperfections, problems like double images (ghosting), and weak signals. HD television provides clearer pictures with excellent sound quality, a wider viewing screen and up-to-date scanning. HDTV will provide more and superior channels provided by regular satellite or cable television with theater system experience.

LED TV:
LED (Light Emitting Diode) TV is an LCD TV that uses LEDs for back lighting, instead of using the fluorescent lights (as it creates more black spots). They are ideally used for low-energy indicators, as substitutes for traditional light sources in general lighting and automotive lighting.
· LED TV currently costs more than a standard LCD or plasma TV.
· LED TV has got great looks and very easy to Install.
· Edge-lit LED television will consume 30-40% of less power than LCD or plasma TV. But backlit LEDs will consume more power.

OLED TVs:
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs depend on light emitting polymer technology. Its features including,

· As OLED materials has the capacity to support full spectrum of visible light, so there will be higher contrast and it has high-speed refresh rates.
· OLEDs are much faster than LCDs. Fast motion and quick eye movement pictures are more realistic. And OLED TVs will make virtual images to look realistic and can be viewed easily for longer periods.
· It has larger viewing angle and for near-eye applications, it provides more pleasant viewing without distortion.
One disadvantage with OLED TVs is the limited lifespan of the organic materials used in its manufacturing. In addition, blue light degrades quickly with a lifespan of 14,000 hours (when used 8 hours per day for five years) on flat-panel displays.

Vizio 55" Class 1080p 240Hz LED HDTV, XVT553SV?

I am going to be purchasing a Vizio 55 inch LED T.V that just came out not to long ago, and the specs say there are 5 HDMI ports, 4 on the back and 1 on the side, and I have seen pictures of 4 on the back and I have seen pictures with 3 on the back, even the Vizio site shows only 3 on back and 1 on the side but it says 5 HDMI ports so i am confused....can anyone shed some light on this situation?

Would an LED or LCD HDTV be better?

Q. For gaming and blue ray.

A. First, unless it is an OLED, "LED" and LCD are the same thing. They both have LCD panels, the ones called just LCD have cold cathode fluorescent lamps for the backlight, LED obviously uses LEDs for the backlight.

And there is no "E" in Blu-ray Disc, which is the proper spelling and capitalization.

What is more important is the panel type, like TN, VA, or IPS. A spec they usually don't specify. A VA or IPS panel with fluorescent backlight is better than a TN with LED backlight. that said my Vizio M260MV is an LED edge type backlit TN 1080p LCD and I love it for Blu-ray and gaming. I typed this on it as my computer monitor.


HDTV for video games?

Question about led HDTV?

Q. Hello everyone!

I just have a question about my tv. I have a Vizio HDTV I bought just in February. (The e261va to be exact.) and I mostly play my Xbox 360 on it through an hdmi cable. It's only 720p, Don't get me wrong, the picture is perfect! It has incrediable color and contrast and everything runs smoothly.

but there is just one thing bothering me. When I look through my iPhones camera at the tv there are vertical lines going through it. With all my other hd Tvs this doesn't happen. I was just wondering if this is showing signs of wear, or am i just being nitpicky or just something that happens with this TV. Any info will be greatly appreciated!

A. LED backlit/edgelit LCD TVs dim the backlight brightness using PWM, which is pulse width modulation, that is the LEDs are actually flashing full on and off faster than you can see.

This has 2 benefits:
1. The flashing helps mask the natural LCD blur or smearing.
2. This method of dimming LEDs (full current then no current) is more energy efficient than dimming them via a constant reduced current.

When is the best time to buy a new tv? Before or after the Superbowl?

Q. Could someone give a brief overview of the differences between LED and HDTV? (I am thinking of purchasing something around 40 inches.)
Also, my purchase would not have to coincide with a Superbowl party. Do you think that prices would be better before or after the game? Or is there a better time of year to purchase a new televsion as new models are introduced?

A. There are 3 type of HDTV which popular in market now LCD HDTV, Plasma HDTV and LED HDTV.

Plasma uses gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical voltages to create a picture.

LCD screens (liquid crystal display) are in layman's terms sandwiches made up of liquid crystal pushed in the space between two glass plates. Images are created by varying the amount of electrical charge applied to the crystals

LED-backlit LCD television or LED TV is an LCD TV that uses LED backlighting rather than fluorescent lights used in traditional LCD televisions

Each technology have their pro & con, here are pro & con for your decision

Pros of Plasma
- Better contrast ratio
- better ability to render deep blacks, more color depth,
- better motion tracking (response time)
- more availability in very large screen sizes.

Cons of Plasma
- more susceptible to burn-in (although this is not as much of a factor now, due to technology improvements in the past few years)
- more heat generation (as well as more power consumption)
- screen glare in brightly lit rooms
- heavier weight, and more delicate to ship.

Do you still own a CRT television, if so what is your reasoning for not getting rid of it yet?
Q. In my house we own 3 flat screen HDTV's I bought the first two and my mother bought a very expensive third, what's your reason for not switching to the HD flat screen era of TV's?

A. Yes I do. In fact, I have two houses with a total of six televisions. All of them are CRTs, and all of them still work perfectly fine. One of them I bought this past April. The tricksters at the store I bought it at tried putting the display model right under a 52 inch 1080p Sony Bravia, but with my knowledge of televisions and my own two eyes comparing it to similarly-sized LCD HDTVs in the store, I saw that it produced a picture that was no worse than the LCDs, in fact I thought it was better. And this is why:
1. LCDs do not produce contrast anywhere near the levels of CRTs. Even LED-backlit models cannot match the black level of CRT televisions.
2. The response time on LCDs is inherently slow enough that motion blur can be observed in fast-action scenes, especially models with 60 Hertz refresh rates while watching movies. No such thing has ever existed with the CRT in its 100+ year history.
3. The viewing angles of LCD displays are relatively narrow. No matter how the manufacturers try to report them, I KNOW when I'm looking at the TV from off to the side or below and the contrast is going to zero. With my CRT television placed about 4 feet to the right of my desk, I can watch TV while working at my desk, and not see incorrect colors.
4. Speaking of colors, the CRT accurately reproduces the colors, as it is not backlit by a fluorescent light producing light of inconsistent wavelengths that cannot match up with the wavelengths of light that the liquid crystals can block.

The icing on the cake? The CRT cost me about half as much as a comparably-sized LCD would have cost me. And guess what, its screen IS flat. (In general for electronics you get what you pay for, but only when comparing TVs of the same display type.)

In addition, I don't have HD programming or a Blu-Ray player, the only gaming I ever do is with a PS2 (non-HD), and I still watch a lot of DVDs and VHS tapes. Non-HD content always looks WORSE on a HDTV of fixed-pixel (non-CRT) technology because of the scaling and de-interlacing that must take place. If I need better picture quality on cable, I just switch to the digital cable channel.

Resolution is NOT as important of a spec as many people and HDTV manufacturers make it out to be. Your eye notices contrast, color, and smoothness (including fast response time) before it notices resolution. When watching constant motion video as on TV, your eye focuses on the motion and changes, the whole picture, rather than on fine details.

Finally, I would like to clear up the misconception that CRT televisions cannot be HDTVs. There were a number of 1080i CRT HDTVs made from the late '90s until about 2 years ago, from a number of brands including Sony, Samsung, RCA, Toshiba, Philips, Panasonic, and others, as well as CRT rear-projection by even more companies. You can take a 21 inch CRT computer monitor with a resolution of 1920x1440 or higher and hook up a HDTV source to a VGA transcoder, and there you have a small 1080p HDTV. And many CRT projectors could display higher than 1080p; the BarcoReality 909 could throw a resolution of 3200x2560p (almost 4 times the resolution of 1080p).

When the time comes for a new TV, it will probably be a plasma. If SED or FED TVs are out by then, I would also consider those.

What is the difference between an LED LCD HDTV and an LCD HDTV?

Q. The reason I'm asking this, is because I'm going to buy one. But, I don't know the differences between them. Can you guys please tell me the advantages and disadvantages of each one? A. The display technology in both types is the same - a Liquid Crystal Display panel. The difference is in the backlight. "Plain old" LCDs use a CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) backlight, while the LED models use LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlights.

LED backlighting typically looks nicer than CCFL backlighting, giving better color range, and in many cases offers a sharper picture.

At this point, I'd go for an LED backlit model if it was available.

A. LED TV's are LED backlit LCD screens that are brighter and arguably sharper than their LCD counterparts. Plasmas have deeper blacks than LCD's and are more for movie watching but if you are into sports then LED/LCD is superior.

I agree with you that 3D is a fad and personally I get sick and develop headaches when looking at the 3D imagery. There have not been enough studies done to determine what long term health effects 3D screens have on the eyes and that alone would be enough to turn me off.

What are the differences between LED and LCD?

Q. Besides LED being thinner and I'm assuming that they consume less power, is there anything else that is different between the two?

A. It's not like PDP (plasma didplay product) and LCD (liquid crystal)...

What depth should a tv stand be? Can a bookcase be a safe replacement?
Q. I am considering using a console bookcase (open design) for my 39 inch flat screen tv. The bookcase is 15.5 inches deep and 29 inches high. The proper tv stands that I have been looking at are around 20 inches deep. Is it safe to place the tv on the bookcase?

A. The proper answer would depend on having more in-depth information about the bookcase, as well as the TV.

How tall is the TV, or more importantly, what is the weight? How deep is the TV pedestal?
Will the bookcase be weighted with books? What will the loaded bookcase weight be?
Will this be on a carpeted floor, or hard floor?

I'll try to give you some guidelines.... hopefully it will help you understand the issues at least.

If the bookcase is mostly unloaded, then it should not serve as a stable platform for a large TV like you mentioned. Also, most bookcases are made from low-density particle board... which doesn't have much resistance to warping under load. If there are a lot of vertical dividers/supports, that can prevent the warping.

If the TV is relatively lightweight (as are many of the more recent LED-backlit LCD models - wrongly called "LED HDTV"), AND if you try to load the lowest shelves with heavy items (books, heavy ceramic items, etc), then it could be a stable platform.

Floor type matters a lot too. Carpeted floors are just not stable, which is why most LCD TV stands are rather deep (and short)... to help compensate for that. If your bookcase is on a hard floor, then all the better. Be VERY careful if you're talking about a carpeted floor with your bookcase.

I would "suggest" having at least 2-3 times the TV weight loaded in the bookcase... with most of it near the floor for maximum stability.

Final test... if it wobbles with the TV on it, if it doesn't feel strong enough, just don't trust it.

How to get the best picture out of my 120hz LCD?

Q. I bought a 46in Samsung 120hz LCD(LED backlit) HDTV, so far at times it does seem better but there is still ghosting with the black and dark colors, the faster the picture, the more distorted and blurry it gets. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The model number is LN46C650L1F.

A. Sadly - motion blur is inherent in LCD panels with fast moving objects. The "120 hz refresh" cuts the problem in half compared to a standard 60 hz refresh model, but it is still there.

Some models have software 'enhancements' that try to smooth out the motion blur, but this sometimes causes other artifacts.

All new televisions should have their Brightness, contrast and color set to sane levels. (These are set at the factory to ultra-bright so the unit will be eye-catching if used as a demo on a bright display floor).

Get a Pixar movie and go to the disk setup menu. You will find test-patterns and instructions for properly setting the brightness, contrast and color.

This will probably reduce how noticeable the ghosting and blur are, but it will not solve it.


What is the difference between an LED LCD HDTV and an LCD HDTV?
Q. The reason I'm asking this, is because I'm going to buy one. But, I don't know the differences between them. Can you guys please tell me the advantages and disadvantages of each one? Also which type of these HDTVs lasts more time and which is more reliable? Last, which of these HDTVs do you guys recommend? Thanks, in advance.

A. The display technology in both types is the same - a Liquid Crystal Display panel. The difference is in the backlight. "Plain old" LCDs use a CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) backlight, while the LED models use LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlights.

LED backlighting typically looks nicer than CCFL backlighting, giving better color range, and in many cases offers a sharper picture.

At this point, I'd go for an LED backlit model if it was available.

When is the best time to buy a new tv? Before or after the Superbowl?

Q. Could someone give a brief overview of the differences between LED and HDTV? (I am thinking of purchasing something around 40 inches.)
Also, my purchase would not have to coincide with a Superbowl party. Do you think that prices would be better before or after the game? Or is there a better time of year to purchase a new televsion as new models are introduced?

A. There are 3 type of HDTV which popular in market now LCD HDTV, Plasma HDTV and LED HDTV.

Plasma uses gas plasma cells charged by precise electrical voltages to create a picture.

LCD screens (liquid crystal display) are in layman's terms sandwiches made up of liquid crystal pushed in the space between two glass plates. Images are created by varying the amount of electrical charge applied to the crystals

LED-backlit LCD television or LED TV is an LCD TV that uses LED backlighting rather than fluorescent lights used in traditional LCD televisions

Each technology have their pro & con, here are pro & con for your decision

Pros of Plasma
- Better contrast ratio
- better ability to render deep blacks, more color depth,
- better motion tracking (response time)
- more availability in very large screen sizes.

Cons of Plasma
- more susceptible to burn-in (although this is not as much of a factor now, due to technology improvements in the past few years)
- more heat generation (as well as more power consumption)
- screen glare in brightly lit rooms
- heavier weight, and more delicate to ship.
Good brand that I would recommend for Plasma is Panasonic or Samsung

Q. In my house we own 3 flat screen HDTV's I bought the first two and my mother bought a very expensive third, what's your reason for not switching to the HD flat screen era of TV's?

A. Yes I do. In fact, I have two houses with a total of six televisions. All of them are CRTs, and all of them still work perfectly fine. One of them I bought this past April. The tricksters at the store I bought it at tried putting the display model right under a 52 inch 1080p Sony Bravia, but with my knowledge of televisions and my own two eyes comparing it to similarly-sized LCD HDTVs in the store, I saw that it produced a picture that was no worse than the LCDs, in fact I thought it was better. And this is why:
1. LCDs do not produce contrast anywhere near the levels of CRTs. Even LED-backlit models cannot match the black level of CRT televisions.
2. The response time on LCDs is inherently slow enough that motion blur can be observed in fast-action scenes, especially models with 60 Hertz refresh rates while watching movies. No such thing has ever existed with the CRT in its 100+ year history.
3. The viewing angles of LCD displays are relatively narrow. No matter how the manufacturers try to report them, I KNOW when I'm looking at the TV from off to the side or below and the contrast is going to zero. With my CRT television placed about 4 feet to the right of my desk, I can watch TV while working at my desk, and not see incorrect colors.
4. Speaking of colors, the CRT accurately reproduces the colors, as it is not backlit by a fluorescent light producing light of inconsistent wavelengths that cannot match up with the wavelengths of light that the liquid crystals can block.

The icing on the cake? The CRT cost me about half as much as a comparably-sized LCD would have cost me. And guess what, its screen IS flat. (In general for electronics you get what you pay for, but only when comparing TVs of the same display type.)

In addition, I don't have HD programming or a Blu-Ray player, the only gaming I ever do is with a PS2 (non-HD), and I still watch a lot of DVDs and VHS tapes. Non-HD content always looks WORSE on a HDTV of fixed-pixel (non-CRT) technology because of the scaling and de-interlacing that must take place. If I need better picture quality on cable, I just switch to the digital cable channel.

Resolution is NOT as important of a spec as many people and HDTV manufacturers make it out to be. Your eye notices contrast, color, and smoothness (including fast response time) before it notices resolution. When watching constant motion video as on TV, your eye focuses on the motion and changes, the whole picture, rather than on fine details.

Finally, I would like to clear up the misconception that CRT televisions cannot be HDTVs. There were a number of 1080i CRT HDTVs made from the late '90s until about 2 years ago, from a number of brands including Sony, Samsung, RCA, Toshiba, Philips, Panasonic, and others, as well as CRT rear-projection by even more companies. You can take a 21 inch CRT computer monitor with a resolution of 1920x1440 or higher and hook up a HDTV source to a VGA transcoder, and there you have a small 1080p HDTV. And many CRT projectors could display higher than 1080p; the BarcoReality 909 could throw a resolution of 3200x2560p (almost 4 times the resolution of 1080p).

When the time comes for a new TV, it will probably be a plasma. If SED or FED TVs are out by then, I would also consider those.

Q. I recently purchased a blue ray and I want to add a big screen LCD to my home I just started reading about DLP HDTV and I wanted to know if anyone recommends it or have and knowledge or suggestions on what i should get. Thanks for your answers.

A. DLP is a type of video projection. It uses a microchip made of tiny mirrors which can quickly change direction to reflect light towards or away from the lens, which focuses the light on the back of the screen. A color wheel spins in sync with the microchip to add color. This type of system offers the most bang for the buck for large TVs. It offers fairly good contrast (better than LCD but not as good as CRT, LED-backlit LCD, or plasma) and good reliability as well as fast response time, but being a projection TV, viewing angles are relatively limited, the television is too big to be wall-mounted (though not as big as CRT projection TVs from the past), and the halogen bulb must be changed every few thousand hours of use.
I believe Mitsubishi is the only brand still making DLP rear-projection TVs, though DLP front projectors have also become common in both business and home theater setups. If you're looking for a big-screen TV at a relatively reasonable price, DLP is the way to go, as long as it doesn't need to be wall-mounted and if you don't mind changing the bulb.

The icing on the cake? The CRT cost me about half as much as a comparably-sized LCD would have cost me. And guess what, its screen IS flat. (In general for electronics you get what you pay for, but only when comparing TVs of the same display type.)

In addition, I don't have HD programming or a Blu-Ray player, the only gaming I ever do is with a PS2 (non-HD), and I still watch a lot of DVDs and VHS tapes. Non-HD content always looks WORSE on a HDTV of fixed-pixel (non-CRT) technology because of the scaling and de-interlacing that must take place. If I need better picture quality on cable, I just switch to the digital cable channel.

Resolution is NOT as important of a spec as many people and HDTV manufacturers make it out to be. Your eye notices contrast, color, and smoothness (including fast response time) before it notices resolution. When watching constant motion video as on TV, your eye focuses on the motion and changes, the whole picture, rather than on fine details.

Finally, I would like to clear up the misconception that CRT televisions cannot be HDTVs. There were a number of 1080i CRT HDTVs made from the late '90s until about 2 years ago, from a number of brands including Sony, Samsung, RCA, Toshiba, Philips, Panasonic, and others, as well as CRT rear-projection by even more companies. You can take a 21 inch CRT computer monitor with a resolution of 1920x1440 or higher and hook up a HDTV source to a VGA transcoder, and there you have a small 1080p HDTV. And many CRT projectors could display higher than 1080p; the BarcoReality 909 could throw a resolution of 3200x2560p (almost 4 times the resolution of 1080p).

When the time comes for a new TV, it will probably be a plasma. If SED or FED TVs are out by then, I would also consider those.

After all, there are so many acronyms and buzzwords to wrap your head around, such as 1080p, 120/240Hz, 24p, HDMI and LED backlighting. Huh?

Along with deciding how big a screen you want (which is usually tied to the size of your budget and the dimensions of your room), the next choice should be between LCD.LCD (LED Backlit) or Plasma — and all have their merits. Here, we'll describe each of these formats, and also point out their shortcomings.

LCD

What is it?

Some newer LCD TVs, however, use LED-backlighting instead. LEDs, or light-emitting diodes, translate to a better-looking picture (see photo).

Pros
There are a number of advantages to buying a LCD televisions. For one, with more than three-quarters of all televisions embracing this technology, there is a lot of choice when it comes to manufacturers, models and sizes (13- to 103-inches, in fact). Competition, of course, breeds more aggressive pricing, too, which is good news for the consumer.

Flat-panel LCD televisions are also very thin, light and energy efficient, and are ideal for rooms with plenty of ambient light, which, for example, comes through large windows as they tend to absorb rather than reflect light (reflected light can obscure your view of the screen).

Cons
Until recently, LCD TVs didn't handle fast motion images as well as plasma TVs, resulting in a somewhat blurred image. Newer LCD TVs, though, have added technologies such as 120Hz frame doubling (or 240Hz frame quadrupling) to smooth out motion. It's still not as good as plasma, but much better than before. Also, LCD TVs used to have problems showing dark blacks (because a light was still on behind the pixel showing black, resulting in a more greyish hue). Many LCD televisions today use local-dimming with LED-backlighting (see next section) for improved contrast ratios (whiter whites and blacker blacks) - but, keep in mind, this is not an issue associated with plasma TVs.

The proper term would really be "LED-backlit LCD TV," but that always seems to get truncated to "LED TV" in everyday conversation, perpetuating the confusion.

To understand how LEDs function in an LCD TV, think of an actual liquid-crystal panel as the plastic pegs in a Lite Brite. They hold a translucent image, but without a powerful backlight to punch through and light it up like a signboard, you’re not going to see much. On your old Lite Bright, an inefficient incandescent light did the job, but pretty unevenly. On a typical LCD TV, fluorescent lights provide the backlighting through a special plastic sheet called a light guide that distributes light from a fluorescent tube evenly over the surface of the TV. On an LED-backlit TV, fluorescent tubes are replaced with light-emitting diodes – LEDs – the same technology that probably lights up your digital watch, the buttons on your monitor, and the indicators on your stereo. They can be either situated along the edges of the TV like a fluorescent tube, or arranged directly behind the screen in a grid. But what difference does it make, and why would anyone spend so much money on it?

The Benefit of LEDs

The most obvious reason LEDs have fallen into favor in LCD TVs: they’re simply more efficient. Although fluorescent lights do a decent job converting electricity to light in the big scale of things, LEDs perform even better. Typically, manufacturers claim an efficiency improvement of up to 30 percent over fluorescent-based sets, which can add up significantly over the lifetime of a TV, especially on larger screens that use more juice to begin with.

LEDs are also much smaller than tubes, even after accounting for the number of them needed to light an entire TV. That means LED-backlit televisions can be manufactured significantly thinner than their tube cousins. For instance, most of the ultra-thin televisions that measured under an inch thick at CES used LED backlights, because they add very little depth to the profile. Though commercial variants aren’t quite as dramatically thin as these prototypes, they’re significantly skinnier than their fluorescent-backlit counterparts, making them some of the most chic and living-room-friendly HDTVs out there.
