Questions:LCD HDTV ?!?!?
Q. 1.I have a 40 inch Bravia LCD tv. It says it has Full HD 1080 does that mean its a HDTV ?
2.How would you know if something is an LCD HDTV or just a LCD TV ?

A. any tv that can display images at and above 720p resolution (meaning 720p, 1080i, and 1080p) are all HDTV's, (high definition tv's).

there has never been a regular definition LCD tv. all standard def tv's are tube crt tv's. every lcd is a high def tv, it's just that it would be a 720p hdtv, or a 1080p hdtv.

Is a LCD 40" TV Flat Pannel HDTV good for gaming?
Q. Tomorrow Im getting a TV for my birthday witch is Tuesday . So Im a gamer, and was wondering if its good for gaming?

A. A name brand LCD might work, but some of the lower end models will probably have motion blur problems and gamer lag.

A plasma display would be better for gaming.

If I had to go for a LCD - it would have to have 120 hz refresh to reduce motion blur, and LED back lights to improve the black levels.

A Panasonic Viera plasma would be a better choice.

Which HDTV should I buy?

Q. I am close to purchasing an LCD HDTV. It will be for overall family use, including gaming. I had my mind made up on a 40" Toshiba 1080p with high refresh rate for gaming, however a 46" Sony 1080p isn't much higher in price. The 46" has a lower refresh rate of 60hz and I'm concerned about screen image tearing during gaming. Does a refresh of 60hz adversely affect gaming imaging quality?

Advice is appreciated, thank-you

Upgrading from flat TV to LCD or Plasma TV?
Q. Hi! :D

We need to know:

- The difference between LCD TV and Plasma TV, and which one is a better choice for us.

- Which brand (Samsung, LG, Sharp, Sony, etc) is the most popular and reliable? Also, which brand is the most user-friendly and lasts longest in terms of years?

- Does screen size matter? i.e. 32" 50" and so on... (We are looking at the 32" currently, but size is negotiable).

- Speakers, woofers - optional for us to buy or not?
What about sound quality in general?

- Ports: HDMI, S-video, AVG port, USB, audio, video, etc...? We are mainly interested in the idea of being able to connect the laptop screen to the TV screen using the AVG or S-video cable so we need some feedback on this too. ;)

- If we connect laptop to TV screen which one gives better picture quality, AVG cable or S-video?

- What is all this "10,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio" and "8,000:1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio" ? Which one is a better choice in terms of price?

- Wall mount, normal base? We want the normal base type by the way.

- Which type requires less power consumption, LCD or Plasma?
Also, which one is more commonly used worldwide?

-Facilities, menus... Any advise? Bugs? (if any) :D

-Do these kinds of TV's have firmware in them? If so, do they need firmware upgrade from time to time?

To sum up, Samsung LCD 32" LA32A330 caught our eyes (it looks beautiful and glossy!). Is it good for family use? Brands are negotiable of course, and we are not looking at spending more than 462 USD, at least for now. :)

A detailed/specific explanation from experienced users is much appreciated :D
Just to clear things up. This TV is not intended for gaming as we don't own any gaming console(s) :D
Typo above:

Instead of AVG, it is VGA :D

A. -The difference between choosing an LCD or a Plasma is going to depend on your viewing preferences. Contrary to what someone else posted LCD's are not better for gaming/sports. This is because they have refresh rates that actually can blur fast moving images. In most modern LCD's it isn't a huge problem but Plasma offers light speed movement.

-Personally I own a Sony Bravia 40" HDTV that provides a 1080p picture. I do play a lot of video games and watch a lot of movies on it and have never had a problem with motion. Some lower end brands might though. Samsung makes a good LCD as well and was my second choice on the list when I bought my Sony. My next purchase will most likely be a Plasma though seeing as how their prices for a 1080p of comparable size have fallen. Plasma and LCD technology both have a fairly long lifespan. Many of the old monitors in airports are Plasma and you don't see those being replaced very often and they're everywhere. It all ends up on how often you use the TV and how well you take care of it.

-Speakers have come a long way since the first flat-panel TV's came out but they're still not the best because they are very small of course. I always recommend purchasing external speakers (i.e. surround sound) with the purchase of a flat-panel TV whether it be LCD or Plasma.

-VGA will give you much better resolution than an S-video will. Using S-video out of a laptop connected to any HDTV is like putting low grade fuel in a Ferrari. The performance is going to be noticeably bad. To get the best resolutions you would want to use DVI or HDMI but VGA is far superior to S-video and you will still have a hi-def picture.

-The higher the contrast ratio the better. This is referring to the level of black that the TV can produce. The darker level of black (the higher the number such as 10,000:1 or 30,000:1) the better the TV generally is at shading. Dynamic ratios are not as good as native though. Native refers to how dark the TV can actually get without the help of software so always check what the Native Contrast ratio is vs. Dynamic.

-If you want a normal base then no problem. All flat panel TV's that I know of come with a normal base. Wall mounting costs more because you have to purchase the mount separately.

-As posted before, LCD uses very low power but I wouldn't let that sway your decision too much. If you end up liking a Plasma more later the power consumption isn't going to break the bank. As far as which is more widely used, I don't know for a fact. I would guess LCD monitors are the most widely used flat-panels simply because you can't walk into a modern office building nowadays that doesn't have an enormous amount of LCD monitors.

-As far as menus and such go, it's all personal preference. Some menus are more user friendly while others lean towards the more tech savvy. Just try them out at the store before you buy. Even if you're purchasing the TV online, head to a store and take a look around to make sure what you're buying is what you want.

-Firmware. Some do have firmware upgrades. My Sony does. As long as you register your TV with the manufacturer they should send the firmware upgrades to you. I registered and Sony then e-mails me when an upgrade is available and asks if I want it shipped. Pretty easy way to fix any issues or add functions to your TV.

-That about answers most of your questions I think. :) I tried my best not to miss anything.

there has never been a regular definition LCD tv. all standard def tv's are tube crt tv's. every lcd is a high def tv, it's just that it would be a 720p hdtv, or a 1080p hdtv.

*****Samsung 40" LCD HDTV or Sony Bravia LCD HDTV??? Need Help!!!***?
Q. It is time to get rid of my 8 year old tube TV and I finally narrowd down to two 1080p Flat Panel LCD HDTV TVs that I like. Samsung 40" and Sony Bravia 40". They are both same exact price with similar picture quality. I can not decide what I should get!

Does anybody have these TVs? What do you like and dislike about it?
Help me decide what I should get please~

Samsung - 40" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV
Model: LN40A530

or

Sony - BRAVIA 40" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV
Model: KDL-40S4100

A. Samsung all the way. My brother has a Samsung 1080p 52" LCD. All I can say is - b-e-a-utiful lol! I was recently at best buy inquiring about Samsung's ToC TV's and the LG Scarlet TV's. The salesman said that Samsung is the top company the whole way. Whether the normal LCD or the ToC, Samsung is the best!

Will the game slows down if I connect my computer to a 37 inch hdtv?

Q. I have a very good gaming video card and 2 gb of ram. Anyways my computer is already connected with 22 inch hdtv. And i want to disconnect it and connect to my other T.V which is 40 inch hdtv. If i play games with that 37 inch hdtv. Will my games slow down? How much would it affect it? Will it be good enough to play games?

A. That depends partly on how good the 40" HDTV is. The larger the screen size the higher the refresh rate you want. The standard refresh rate for LCD screens is 60Hz. If the other HDTV you have is 120Hz, or even 240Hz, then it should be alright. Also, if it has a Gaming Mode, then that will help reduce any "stuttering" so you don't have any delayed reaction between joystick and game movement.

How and where do I replace a cracked LCD screen?
Q. I cracked a $700 SHARP Aquos 40 inch HDTV and I'm trying to see if I can replace the screen before I go the "replace the TV" route. Any idea where and how I'd go about doing this, and is it a couple hundred bucks, or probably more than the TV itself?

A. I think in Sanyo dealership.

What do you think of the brand LG when it comes to lcd hdtv's?

Q. Im looking to purchaseing a 26" LCD HDTV, but i really dont know what brand to purchase. I looked at a LG and noticed the picture quality looked pretty good. It had good color, but dont know if its a good brand over all.

A. the sd picture on your 26" will look good, maybe a little foggy. Use the S-video input for the best results. I would avoid the HD programming option on a set that small because the HD resolution doesn't really shine until a 40" screen but that's with my eyes your results may vary

What is the easiest way to go HD on new Sony LCD HDTV?
Q. We just purchased a Sony 40" HDTV LCD 1080p. We have a pioneer DVD surrond system and a phillips DVR. What is the easiest way to have this system setup in HD and what do I need to get this done. I am not sure if my DVR is HD but we just got it about 2yrs ago from Directv brand new. Thanks!

A. Try to connect your DVD to your TV using HDMI cables, and make sure your Pioneer DVD have HDMI output, and about your DVR i think you can't go HD with it.

How do I set up my tv so my wii screen fits the whole screen?
Q. I have a 40" lcd hdtv. When I hook up my wii to it, it doesn't fill up the whole screen, only about 3/4 of it, with 2 vertical black stripes at each end of the screen. I've tried the wii widescreen settings to no avail, and i've played around with my tv settings as well but no luck.

A. See if there's a "Screen" button on your TV remote control. If there is press it until you reach the sreen size you want.

How do I hook my Wii up to me 40" Samsung HDTV if I already have a cable box/PS3/DVD player inputed?

Q. I have a Samsung series 550 40" LCD HDTV. I already have my PS3/Cable Box/DVD player hooked up in its inputs. I can get the wii connected to the back showing picture in black and white with sound but can't seem to configure it into the right input so the Wii comes in color. PLEASE HELP!

A. I think you're putting a Composite cable in a Component Jack, or vice versa. Are you using component cables or the Composite cable that it came with? What input jacks are you using?

And have you considered using a video switch to manage everything? I got a PS2, a PC, a DVD player, and my Wii. I use a video matrix switch to put them all on one component jack on my TV.

If I'm using an HDTV as a computer monitor, is it possible that images can be burned into the screen?

Q. I just recently bought a Polaroid 40" LCD HDTV. I used a VGA cable to connect the TV to my computer. I was wondering if it is possible that I could ruin my television by burning the onscreen image into the TV if I leave my computer inactive?

A. I'll let the experts at Samsung, the number one shipping LCD TV manufacturer in the US answer your question:

"Although much less susceptible than Plasma TVs, LCD TVs are still subject to screen burn in (image retention) ... If you are using your LCD TV as a computer monitor, the same general rule holds true: Avoid keeping a static picture or a picture with static elements (black bars, black borders, logos, etc.) on your LCD TV for more than two hours at a time..."
