Is it really important to have calibration on an LCD television?

Q.

A. Very, very few consumers need a professional display calibration. With few exceptions many of todays displays are much improved over those of the past and have at least one display or picture mode that will provide acceptable grayscale performance straight out of the box. Consumers that purchase a good quality, well-designed display will rarely benefit from a professional calibration not to mention that such a service could potentially make your picture fidelity worse if you were unfortunate enough to hire a less than competent calibration service. Furthermore, there are many consumers that simply will not enjoy an accurate, optimized and/or calibrated video image while others cannot because their viewing environment is less than optimal (or in some cases because a consumer has color deficient vision.)

Like most consumers your best bet (assuming you own a reasonably well designed, well built LCD TV,) is to purchase or rent one or more of the popular display optimization (aka calibration) discs listed below in order to properly optimize your displays settings. If after attempting to optimize your TV picture youre still dissatisfied then you may want to contact one of the calibration services Ive listed below. However, under no circumstance do I recommend that a consumer pay $250 to $400 for a professional display calibration on a television which has an MSRP of roughly less than five times the cost of the calibration.

Is the magnavox 32" class 720p LCD HDTV a good tv to purchase?

Q. I just recently saw a Target catalog and they were selling a 32" magnavox 720p, lcd hdtv for 400.00 and I was wondering if that's a good price and if that tv's a good one.

I'm a college student and I'm just trying to save money during this recession and when I saw this tv it looked like a good price to me.

To anyone who has that tv ...
how is it? what are the things you like and dislike about it?

A. YES. is good quality 32 inc 720 P HD TV. for screen size 37 and below. you don't need 1080 P full HD.because no body eye can get the difference between 720 P HD and 1080 P full HD from an 32 inc LCD TV. ( only 40 inc and above screen size, our eye get the difference between two in pictures Quality ). Magnavox brand use to under Philips USA. but Philips Brand TV and Magnavox TV sold in USA , is all " own " by Funai Japan. all TV is designs in Osaka HQ and manufactures in Thailand Funai factory. the TV use some of PATENTED circuit designs by Funai Electric , some other China / Taiwan TV manufactures " copy " it for there TV, case BAN to sold in USA for those model " copy " Funai designs. ( Vizio brand is one of the Brand , some of the products case ban by US Trade Authority to sold in US from 19 April 2009 ) . Is good TV + prices. is not top great pictures quality. but you will happy and enjoy it !

What's the difference between LCD, Plasma, DLP, and CRT TV's?
Q. I am looking to buy an HDTV and really need to know. Also, what are the best brands for each?

A. They are all different ways of putting a picture on the screen. The LCD is the longest lasting of them all. It stands for Liquid crystal display. The screen is made up of little liquid cryatals in red blue and green dots. If you had a microscope you could see them. They are electronically charged If you have a lap top it is a LCD screen. CRT is old technology. It is a vacuum tube Cathode Ray Tube and the screeen is lighted by electon gun shooting at a phosfor (sp) coated screen. and then rapidly scanning back and forth. The palsma screen is middle technology where the screen is plazma coated and then electronically charged. The plasma can wear out with age. The LCD can get scratched and permanetly damaged just by an aprasive cleanser. The Best way to tell which gives you the best image is go look at them side by side in a store like best buy. What you really need to know is make sure what you buy has both a NTSC and a HDTV tuner built in. If its HDTV ready then you will need a seperate "box" to receive HDTV signal. The other thing you have to know is very soon all tv's will have to be HDTV and the old NTSC tv's will need a box.
I could go on and on but if you want all the technical stuff look at this site http://www.geocities.com/columbiaisa/camcord_intro.htm
Generally speaking below 40" or so LCD is the way to go.. bigger then that Plazma is the only answer. Sharp electronics is introducing larger LCD sceens all the time. I am sure in time the lcd screen could be the size of a air craft carrier deck. I personally have a 32 inch LCD set i got on sale at BJ wholesale club. The brand is Olevia made by Syntax. Not a better known brand but it works well and I can use it for a computer monitor too and it was under $400 on sale. If it breaks I have no clue to call but for $389. It was the largest and cheepest LCD set BJ's had. Now if more programs came in HDTV or if the dish companies would wake up and offer more hdtv service I would be happier.

Blu ray or a upscaling player? Is blu ray disc player worth it to buy?

Q. I just bought a LCD 1080i. I"m debating on just buying upscaling or blu ray disc player. Can Blu ray play regular DVDs and play on 1080i format? Or should I just save money and by a upscaling player that plays regular DVDs. How is the output on the upscaling player?

A. Not an easy question to answer.

First, you will have to decide based on YOUR priorities ... but let me offer some things to consider.

- Blu-ray is, and will likely remain, a niche premium format for people who can benefit and are willing to pay the premium price (~$300+ for the player and $5-$20 more for disks of the same movie vs DVD).

- Opinion of Blu-ray can vary from "wow!" to "what's all the fuss about" ... depending on how it is being displayed.

- To FULLY benefit you need a 40" or larger 1080p HDTV, with a good surround sound system capable of handling the advanced audio formats.

- You will still get some benefit from Blu-ray with a 720p HDTV (what you have), but you don't mention screen size, where you intend to watch from and whether you have a good sound system ... all of which influence the benefit/cost equation.

- Many Blu-ray films are poorly mastered and don't look much better than DVD even under optimum conditions.

- An upconverting DVD player won't make a DVD look as good as a Blu-ray disk, but on a 720p HDTV under about 40" detail will look fairly close. But picture quality is subjective -- and dependent on more than just resolution -- so you really have to see it for yourself and decide if Blu-Ray is worthwhile. Why not view a DVD and a Blu-ray disk on a HDTV similar to yours and see for yourself?

Personally I can say that I have a 720p projector and a 110" screen, and I tried HD DVD disks (which give essentially identical picture and audio quality to Blu-ray) and found insignificant improvement over upscaled DVDs. Since then I have bought 2 HD DVD tiltes (Planet eart and Sunrise Earth) and over 50 DVDs. I use my HD DVD player as an upscaling DVD player ... and pay about $20 less for movies than if I bought Blu-ray. So I guess I'm biased ... but upconverted DVD look just fine with me.

I should caution that not everyone sees the same thing (which is why I recommended seeing for yourself).

If you do consider an upconverting players note they are only as good as the video processing chip they use ... so avoid the under $60 models. The best are Oppo's models but they are a bit pricy.

BTW, if you do decide an upconverting DVD player is enough the liquidation prices (~$75) in effect on the Toshiba HD-A3 or Venture HD-7000 (Wal-Mart's brand) HD DVD player make them a very attractive option (and as a bonus you can play any of the 400 HD DVD movies available (Noting there will be very few new ones after this month)). But you will have to move fairly fast .. a lot of people have realized the same thing and they are getting snapped up fast.

Finally, if you decide on Blu-ray, other than the PS3, you should wait until near the end of the year to get a Profile 2.0 (BD-Live!) player, and for prices to come down a bit.

Hope that helps.

Do i have to purchase a 1080P TV to play the PS3?
Q. Or can i just play it on a Toshiba. I don't know if my Toshiba is a 1080p or some other "P". Also which is better LCD or some other type of TV. Im planning on getting a 80GB PS3....if that helps to answer my question.

A. A 1080P HDTV is the only one capable of utilizing the PS3 to its full potential, however one is not required to play a PS3. Most games for the PS3 have a native resolution of 1080p, so a 1080P HDTV would be a good investment, because for sure

I have 720P HDTV and really it makes no difference if the TV is under 32" and the difference is subtle if the screen is under 50". Therefore if you don't need a really big TV (depending on the size of your room), 1080P is not necessary. Although if you have the money, you would want to make this investment after spending 400-500 dollars on a PS3.

Plasma currently yields the best picture, with the best colour accuracy, refresh times, etc. However a LCD would b best for gaming purposes.

How do I set up a home theatre?

Q. I already have an LCD HDTV and Blu-Ray player in my living room, along with an Xbox 360, but I would like to add a home theatre surround system, and I don't know what to do. I do know that I would like it to be 5.1. All I would like to know is, what exactly it is that I need to buy.

A. Look at the Onkyo HT-S3300, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. You connect your blu ray disc player and XBOX to the receiver using HMDI cable. Then another HDMI cable connecting the receiver to the tv. Fry's Electronic carry the system and it is for under $400. This is better than those cheap home theater in a box that are not very flexible for adding anything to it. Hope this will help you out.

What is the best LCD monitor for my MacBook Pro?
Q. I have a MacBook Pro 13" and I am looking to purchase an external LCD HD monitor. I would like it to be 30". What is the best one that I can get while keeping the price under $400?

A. Presently, there is no such thing as a 30" monitor that costs under $400.

30-inch monitors are usually very high-resolution monitors that do 2560x1600, and those cost upwards of $1000.

Unless you want a 32-inch LCD HDTV, those might be had for $400, but their resolution is far lower, usually 1366x768. There are also LCD HDTVs that can do 1920x1080 (aka 1080p High Definition), but you would be hard-pressed to find one of those for under $400.

What is the best quality hd, lcd, tv for under 400? 32"?
Q. Is Westinghouse a good brand? I know sony and samsung are some of the top, but are the cheaper ones worth it? Is the quality still good? thanks so much

A. Nope with tvs you get what you pay for. Maybe you can get by if you never seen a HDTV before going with an off brand and be happy but the second you see a name brand you'll think it'll look bad. My dad had a Polaroid not only was the picture not as good as the Samsung the audio kept going out and then it officially died right after the warranty expired. If you plan on keeping your TV for a while(LCD and Plasmas life span is at least 60,000-100,000 hours at least 20years of watching) you might as well buy something you'll be happy with and that will last.

It was the largest and cheepest LCD set BJ's had. Now if more programs came in HDTV or if the dish companies would wake up and offer more hdtv service I would be happier.

Walmart has a sell on 32" Samsung 720p LCD for $398
