Vizio GV42L 42" HDTV LCD settings?
Q. I just bought a Vizio GV42L 42" LCD HDTV. Just a few questions:
1) what settings have you used for cable programming and/or movies, as I hear to get good picture you really need to tweak it right.
2) I have my comcast HD DTS box and progressive scan DVD player connected to the Vizio using component cables. When I'm watching an HD channel, it does look HD, and when I'm watching a DVD It does look much higher quality than typical analog cables..However, when I press the info button. It still says resolution coming it at only 480i. Should I be concerned and/or try using HDMI cables instead?
~Gavin Ng

A. I ran into this problem with my Samsung LCD.. the Cox Cable HD box wasn't automatically converting the signal to 1080i. You'll have to go into the settings of your cable box and manually switch it to 1080i... I ran through a setup process that it displays a bunch of screens and which ever one you can see it programs the box to use ...after that it automatically switched between the 1080i for the HD channels and lower 720/480 for the non HD channels.

Call your cable provider.. thats what i did to figure out the setup program.

HDTV Picture Settings, Help Me Understand!!!?

Q. I have a 26" Vizio VW26L, most of you probably think it's a crappy, small LCD HDTV but it was all I could afford a year ago (sorta regret it now) but alas I'm stuck with it for a while. I've been trying to get the best HD picture I can out of this HDTV so when I get a PS3 on Tuesday and hook it up via HDMI it will look the best it can but I'm not very knowledgeable with some of the settings. Since you don't have my HDTV I know you can't give me the right settings but if you could just give me a place to start, tell me what certain things mean, etc. I'd really appreciate it! Below I'll list all of the picture settings and how the range it.

Backlight (1-100)
Contrast (1-100)
Brightness (1-100)
Sharpness (1-7)
Color (1-100)
Tint (-32-32)
Color Temperature (Cool, Normal, Warm)

ADVANCED SETTINGS:

DNR (Off, Low, Medium, Strong)
Black Level Extender (On, Off)
Peak White Limiter (On, Off)
CTI (Off, Low, Medium, High)
Color Enhancement (On, Off)
Dynamic Contrast (On, Off)
Dynamic Backlight (On, Off)

I really would like to know what each feature means so I can better understand and better calibrate my HDTV. If you have this HDTV tell me your settings, Thank you!

A. OK, so the first batch of controls are WAY more important than the others. I'll breifly cover the others, you'll mostly want them off.

DNR is digital noise reduction - it will attempt to reduce digital noise in a picture. Probably makes as many mistakes as it fixes, I would leave it off, but you probably wouldn't notice either way.

Dynamic Backlight - sounds horrendous, leave this setting off. If you manage to configure your TV correctly, if the backlight adjusts itself dynamically, it will constantly make all the other settings incorrect.

Dynamic Contrast - the same as the dynamic backlight, leave it off.

Color enhancement - hmmmm maybe have it on, personal preference I guess. I'd leave it off.

CTI - Color Transient Intensity. This is described very well anywhere, I would leave it off as you can't be sure what it's doing.

Black Level Extender - This you might want on, but it's a matter of matching it to your source (PS3). I can't remember what the setting on the PS3 is, but there will be something that will tell it to output extended black levels or not. Set to match on both.

Peak White Limiter - I've not heard it refered to as that before, but it sounds similar to the black level extender. There is some sort of option (again, can't remember what it's called on the PS3) about setting the white levels. See if you can make an educated guess as to what would make them match, if you're unsure, turn it off.

So, now to the important ones. It's very hard to say where to start with these controls, as literally all TV's are different. For example, your brightness goes from 1-100, many TVs might start around 50 out of the box, and you adjust a little up or down from there. For my TV, I have a range of 0-40, and the correct brightness setting for me is just 4.

To give you a very VERY rough starting point:

Personally, I would set the Color Temp to normal (or possibly warm).
Keep the sharpness low, but no so low that things look blurry, perhaps 2-3. Leave the Tint where it came, probably 0. Color, hmmm, probably leave that wherever it came, it's very hard to tell without using a calibration filter to be honest. Then set the backlight to where is comfortable level for normal viewing, and then adjust the 2 most important ones - brightness and contrast.

The only way to accurately set these things up, is to get a calibration DVD. You can purchase these quite easily from places like Amazon. A well-known one is DVE (Digital Video Essentials), although perhaps not best for an absolute beginner. If you want a free one, and if you want an HD one that'll work in your shiny new PS3, check this link out:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=948496
Just download the file, burn to DVD and get blu-ray compatible HD calibration going.

Failing that, an incredibly rough way to adjust your brightness is to get a black screen on your TV, (make sure contrast is in the middle) turn the brightness ALL the way down, and then start increasing it until you see the blackness start to turn grey. Then, TRY and get a totally white screen, increase your contrast all the way up to max, then start decreasing it until it starts to turn grey.

Hope that helps.

PS3 and vizio trouble?
Q. i recently purchased a 42" vizio lcd hdtv (it is a 1080p). i hooked it up to my ps3 and i would like to know how to change the picture quality on my ps3. i tried going to 1080p in the display settings but there was no change in the picture quality. is there a cable i need to buy or is there something im doing wrong?
All I need to know is-How do I get my games in HD on that television. Do I need to buy the HDMI Television Cable and then do that setting at Display Settings?

A. You need to use an HDMI cable to get a 1080p picture. What connection are you using?

The PS3 automatically chooses the best resolution for the media you are viewing based on your video connection. Are you trying to play a game or watch a movie or what? Provide details on your current setup and what you are viewing on the TV.

What is the best picture clarity setting for my 32" vizio LCD HDTV?
Q. I need to know the best setting for the picture Quality, so that its not fuzzy and i need the best color settings. i have a vizo 32" LCD HDTV. i want it too look like the picture Quality at the store like best buy.

A. Make sure you are tuned to an HDTV station..?? Are you on a cable box with HD?? Satellite?? ON my cable box, the normal channel 4 is like the old analog.. Channel 404 is in HD.. (Different in other areas.) Check with your cable provider. I also like to run the Sharpness in the 'Picture' options rather high. Part of your Menu settings... Most sets are pretty well set up when sold in a default condition..

Sometimes my new 37 inch vizio lcd hdtv gets noticeably darker and brighter.?

Q. Sometimes my new 37 inch vizio lcd hdtv gets noticeably darker and brighter. is it the commercials or my tv.
ok first of all i got my tv about 3 days ago and i dont have my hdtv cable box yet.
so when i turned on my tv it scaned channels and now i have channels 2 - like 100. but thats because i dont have a cable box in my room yet so im stuck with that.
now i get channels like 4 for nbc and 4-1 for nbc but its picture is nicer but unlike the channel 704 on my cable box that has the tag nbchd it only says nbc.
on the other hand somethimes when i watch commercials i notice that in the commercail the tv gets a little brighter and darker. is it the commercials or is it that i am just running a normal analog wire from my wall for ''hd'' channels instead of the composite wires that are from the cable box.
please replay asap because im getting a ps3 & hdmi cable on friday and i am going to have a movie night and i dont want the brightness going darker and brighter when we are watching the movie (bluray). so should i go to costco and replace it or will the "HD" (composit for cable box and hdmi for ps3) cables improve it.

A. My toshiba did that also when i got it.On the toshiba the setting is called dynalight. Not sure what it would be on a vizio but it brightens darker scenes etc.I did not like it at all.Even with a converter it will continue. You will have to find that setting and turn it off.Always write down what all settings are called and are set at before you change anything.

Is Dynex HDTVS a Good Brand?
Q. I just bought a 40inch 1080p LCD 60Hz Dynex. I only play video games on my xbox 360 with it. Does anyone know anything about dynex and if there a good brand. Ok another thing if im playing a 720p game should i put my tv on 720p or leave it on 1080p? What would be better for motion blur and other things.

A. It's a great set. It has a higher customer rating than vizio. It's a 60 Hz set, you if you have lag turn the DRC off in the advanced picture settings. Insignia and Dynex are Best Buys house brands to compete with the walmart, costcos, and sams clubs. It's a bargain set which bang for the buck, it's great!

Can I clone my laptop screen to an external monitor so that both screens display the same image?

Q. My laptop is the Compaq 2580US. I can extend the laptop screen via the s-video port to my Vizio LCD HDTV screen, but I can't clone (duplicate) the laptop screen onto the TV, so that the TV would show a larger version of the laptop screen.

A. Usually I hear the opposite complaint. You can clone the screen, but not extend.

Using Windows XP, right click on the desktop and go into properties
Click on the setting tab
You should see a graphic representation of your two monitors near the top of the screen
Click on the second monitor in the graphics
In the properties underneath, make sure that "Extended the screen" is not checked.
Apply that setting

Depending on your video card, the driver may have its own configuration utility. That could be overiding the Windows settings. Usually you can get to the utility by another tab in Desktop properties. Check under there.

Also many laptops have a key combination (such as FN+F8 on the Dells) which toggle the picture between CRT, LCD, and both without having to go into the properties. Check they documentation for your make/model for such a key combination.

Do all HDTVs have fuzzy or blurry picture?
Q. Hi I just bought a samsung hdtv lcd a550 series. I noticed that it kinda of fuzzy and sometimes a bit blurry on regular channels but even on the HD channels its not 100% crisp. ESPN basketball is also a little fuzzy and definitly has motion blur. Is this how all HDTV LCDs are or is it just my TV. A. With a good HD signal it shouldn't be fuzzy, but there are some situations which would give a fuzzy picture.

1) If you don't have HD programming you will get what could be called a fuzzy image

2) If you have cable or satellite some channels are less crisp than others due to compression of the HD signal (it varies by supplier and channel so it's difficult to specify). This is one area where off the air (OTA = antenna) based HDTV can be better than cable/satellite.

4) Some HDTV programming is really scaled SD material and looks worse than true HD.

Motion blur is a fact of life with LCD HDTVs -- particularly in 1080i.

The best way to find out if it is the TV or not is to feed a known good signal -- such as a Blu-ray disk via HDMI direct to the TV. Next best is an HD game or an upconverted DVD.

Good luck.

Did anyone else get the PS3 500 GB God of War Ascension Legacy Bundle and notice netflix issues?

Q. Okay so for those of you who answered "yes" to my question, I want to know why there are issues. My friend has an older PS3 that initially came with 160 GB. His netflix is nice and clear and crisp, while the netflix on this PS3 sucks. I mean, the quality is less than that on the netflix on my wii and it doesn't even have an HDMI port let alone an HDMI cord. So, does the netflix suck because this particular PS3 is made with cheap and terrible parts? I mean, I tried all of the settings on my TV and PS3 and I couldn't change the terrible quality. So, am I right? Is it because Sony got lazy and dished out a cheaply-made system just to make money? Cause, if so, I want to get a refund. Thanks!
@Moogles: But doesn't the spring loaded disc tray seem a little cheap? And it makes a lot of noise when I play Fallout 3 and Assassins Creed 2. And yea my TV is a a new VIZIO so it is definitely HD capable.

A. netflix is a separate app that doesn't change because of the ps3 model you have , it's software not hardware so if you have issues you have bad internet or a differnt TV than he does , plain and simple . Your friend has a better or faster internet connection than you so he can stream videos from netflix better and /or a better TV than you and if you took your console and connected to his internet and his TV you'd have the same netflix quality he does

you can't compare video quality and get the exact same picture quality unless you have the exact same TV and exact same internet settings and speeds . Maybe your friend has a nice plasma 600 htz TV and you have a cheap lcd model that's only 60 htz or something , Vizio is one of the lowest end TV models you can buy and pretty poor quality so that is probably the main issue with your netflix looking bad compared to your friends .
Compared to a samsung or panasonc HDTV your vizio is not a huge step above an sdtv
he TV makes a huge difference in how the picture looks ( go look at the TVs in any store side by side and you will see they all look different , some are darker , some have better colors and some look pixelated while others don't )

The manual disc tray was actually one of the best features on the ps3 super slim , anyone who ever had an older model with the automatic disc tray and eject and had their ps3 die while playing a game would tell you that being able to simply open the door and take out their game is a lot better than having their game gets stuck in the console .
sure there are a few cheaper parts , but what do you expect ? parts always get cheaper over time , that doesn't mean they are not the same or better quality . the chip in the new model is half the cost of the one in the original ps3 but also uses less power , is faster and is not going to overheat like the original chipset sony used , the actual ps3 case is cheaper to build but that;s because it uses less material and doesn't have the fancy chrome parts and is smaller and because it uses less space and weighs less shipping them is cheaper saving sony millions , and a lot of the other parts that are used are newer , better designs that cost less to make which is why instead of a $700 60 gig ps3 you can buy a $299 500 gig ps3 super slim that comes with a game or other item free .

the noise is because the games are older games that need to have the disc read a lot , and because there is less material around the disc drive you hear it reading the disc more than you would on an older model , it doesn't affect the console or mean its inferior .

My Vizio LCD tv still has a grainy picture no matter what i do to the settings.. help?
Q. I am using an HDMI cable and whether im watching a bluray on my ps3 or watching hdtv, it still looks slightly grainy.

A. vizio is so cheap sorry. you should have gotten a samsung haha bitch...!!!

does the quality of lcd tvs on the wall at walmart start to get bad?

Q. i was wondering cos i was gonna buy a tv, but then i noticed a little blurriness on it i was just wondering if because they are running all day everyday if their quality starts to get bad? this is the tv i was looking at. http://www.walmart.com/Vizio-42-Inch-1080p-HDTV/ip/10993797

A. Display models at retail stores do get a lot of usage early in their life, having to run constantly, often with settings such as contrast and color turned way up to make the picture quality look better under the bright lighting of the store. As such, it is possible. Always avoid buying display models if you can. Another possibility is that the TV might not be connected to a 1080p source.

What are settings that I can adjust to get the best picture on my Samsung 52" LN-T5261F 1080P LCD HDTV?
Q. When I walk into Costco I see that a 37" VIZIO 1080P looks sharper and clearer than my 52" Samsung with a BLU Ray?? Is this because my TV was not professionally calibrated after it was installed at my home? Any suggestions? I dont want to pay $400 bucks to have it done.

A. Sometimes "sharper and clearer" isn't anything more than just turning up the brightness. However, if you have ever seen a professionally calibrated TV the first thing you notice about it is that it's not bright at all. Our eyes deceive us. That's why manufacturers ship their TVs with "torch mode" as the default setting.

I have the Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics disc. It guides you through video (and to a lesser extent audio) calibration. I have the disc but I haven't used it yet. I've seen testimonies from people who say it gave them a whole new TV. There's also a DVD called Avia, although I have no experience with it, so I can't really comment on its effectiveness.

How to change an hdtv in sd mode to get a hd picture?

Q. I recently bought a 37" Vizio LCD HDTV. However, when I press info to see the show it says the show then 480i SD. But I have an HD Cable Box and everything. How do I make it so I have an HD picture instead of an SD picture?

A. FIRST, you NEED to check your cable box....make sure in the menu that it's set to OUTPUT a 1080 signal.....if it's set for 480, that's all it will deliver to your TV set.

The TV itself is automatic....no settings in your TV to adjust.

Now, YOU NEED to use either an HDMI cable or a COMPONENT cable to get HD. You can't use your standard 3-wire cables to get HD.

Then tune your box to an HD station like Discovery HD...
