What do I need to connect my laptop and desktop to my lcd hdtv?

Q. What do I need to buy? what are the connections called that my tv needs to do this? Is there any way I can do this wireless?

A. LCD HDTVs usually have HDMI ports. If your computer has an HDMI output, all you need is a standard HDMI cable to connect the two. HDMI is also compatible with DVI, so if your computer has a DVI output you can use a DVI-to-HDMI cable to connect to your LCD HDTV.

If your computer only has an old VGA port, hopefully your LCD HDTV has a VGA port too. If it does, you use a standard VGA monitor cable.

what is 240hz lcd hdtv?
Q. My new 240 lcd hdtv has it and I notice that my cable box connection is 60hz with 1080i resolution. Is this a related/requirement issue? Is the cable box limited to 60hz or? can my new HDTV EVER be capable of using the 240 (or other newer HDTV with 120hz).Is this just a marketing scheme if most cable connections can't go beyond 60? A. 120Hz and 240Hz are the new buzzwords in LCD TV technology. We are often asked exactly what this means and what effect it has on you, the viewer. Let's get a few technical terms out of the way first to make this easier to understand.

Hertz (Hz) � Hertz is a a unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second. If you were to think of the Hertz rate of turning a light switch on and off, 1Hz would be turning the light on and off, 1 time in 1 second.

Refresh Rate � In televisions and monitors, refresh rate is the number of times the screen is redrawn in one second. It is expressed in hertz (Hz). A TV with a refresh rate of 60Hz redraws the screen 60 times per second.

Frame Rate � Moving pictures are actually a series of still images that are displayed quickly in succesion to give the appearance of motion. Frame rate is the number of still images displayed in one second, it is often expressed as frames per second (fps). Video in the NTSC format is displayed at 29.97 frames per second (25 fps for PAL and SECAM) and film is shot at 24 frames per second.

3:2 pulldown � Above we can see that video on your television is displayed at 29.97 frames per second and movies are shot on film at 24 frames per second. This creates a problem if you want to view something shot on film on a television. There are nearly 5 frames missing from the conversion. To solve this problem a process called 3:2 pulldown is used to convert the film into something you can watch on your TV. This is done by adding extra frames to the film to fill in the extra space. For example, if we have 4 frames of video denoted as ABCD it would be converted to video by adding an extra frame to the 4 film frames (ABBCD). This results in what is known as "judder".

Judder � A visual artifact that results when converting film content to video. It is most often seen as what appears to be jerky camera movement where there should be smooth panning.
24p � 24p is simply video content running at 24 frame per second, just like film.
120Hz/240Hz LCD TVs Displaying Film Content

A little math and the above explanations show the advantages of displaying film content on a screen with a 120Hz or 240Hz refresh rate. Most LCD TVs have a refresh rate of 60Hz. 24 does not go into 60 without a remainder so 3:2 pulldown and it's resulting judder is required to display film content on a TV redrawing the screen 60 times a second. On the other hand, 24 goes into 120 or 240 evenly so film can be displayed at it's native frame rate eliminating judder.

Most Blu Ray players can output content at 24p so with this and a 120Hz/240Hz LCD TV you will be seeing an accurate number of frames when watching film content.

ALso, what is that LED LCD crap? is it better?!

A. LCD and LED are actually two different types of TV's. LED usually has better color quality and lighting, as well as viewing angle, but they run quite expensive.

After reviewing the two HDTV's you've listed, the LG 47" is a sure winner and I would highly recommend it. The specifications are better and will give you a better picture. It has a great design as well, which is great with HDTV's.

EDIT: For the guy below me, pardon my error. I misread something I suppose. I did research again, and LED TV's do in fact have better power consumption.

If you enjoy throwing $6400 out of the window of your car, then by all means, buy the plasma tv. If youre looking for a decent tv that will last your for a very long time, go with the LCD. While, plasma screen tvs do have a slightly better picture quality than LCDs, their(plasma) lifespans are only about 7-8 years, maximum. Most only last 5-6 years. Some people will try to bullsh** you by saying "Well, they havent been out for that long, how would you know." Well, I know, and so do the people that manufacture them, and so do the people that own them. Another point that you can make is the PS2/other game systems problem, on a plasma tv, if you leave a game system on for an extended period of time, images will become burned into the plasma screen. LCDs, while bulkier, do not have these problems. To me, people that own plasma screen tvs are just like the idiots who own hybrid cars, the only reason they buy them is so that they brag about it to their friends, in the event that the yuppie a-holes even have any. To be simple about it, if want to buy a good Hi-Def tv without spending a small fortune go with the LCD. If you have a couple of extra bucks to spend, I'd recommend DLP, but thats another story.

Now thats out of the way, if youre absolutely hell-bent on getting LCD screen then you have to go with Sony, no questions asked. I think that the vega gives you the biggest bang for your buck, but check it out, at this point in time theres not a huge cost difference between models, general speaking. In any event you want to make sure that you get a Sony. Next, having all of the HD monitors in the world won't do you a damn bit of good unless you have HDTV service. Below are your options:
Cable TV: Absolutely sucks. High cost, crappy picture quality and rather small amount of HD programming even available. Upside: Its HDTV for dummies, your ignorance is your bliss.

DirecTV: Excellent picture and quality at a decent price, however even DirecTV doesnt have a whole of programming in the way of HDTV. Also, I'm not a big fan of their HD technology, but thats just me talking, I'm kind of, well actually, very picky when it comes to TV.

Dish Network: At this point in time, Dish is probably the primo way to go for HDTV. They have excellent receivers/equipment at a fairly modest cost but more importantly they have more HD programming available than any one else on the Planet Earth. I shouldnt be saying this, given the fact that my cousin owns a DirecTV franchise, but what the hell do you care?

These are all options to mull over, but don't be an idiot when it comes to spending money on your TV setup. I promise, if you follow my advise you'll be more than happy.

What are LCD HDTV?

Q. I know what HDTVs are...but some HDTV doesn't have LCD. What's LCD?

A. LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. It's one of the few technologies used for making displays/monitors/TVs. Other technologies include Plasma, Cathode Ray Tube (CRT), Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED), Projection, and a few others not yet ready for consumers.

As opposed to HDTV, which simply means any display with 1280x720 resolution or higher, usually with a digital TV tuner (but not necessarily a HD tuner).

So an LCD HDTV would be a Liquid Crystal Display with a resolution of 1280x720 or higher.


Which is best LCD or HDTV?

A. I believe you are misunderstanding your own question. You can get a LCD TV with out HD, but you can't get HDTV without it either being LCD or plasma.

A LCD HDTV are very nice. I have a Sony 40in. that is a LCD HDTV.

What are the differences between LCD HDTVs and Plasma HDTVs?

Q. What are their Pros and Cons?

A. LCD HDTVs:

LCD uses little pixels which contain liquid crystals inside of them. These liquid crystals alternate to block out certain spectrums of light, so that the viewer only sees the colour allowed to pass through the pixel. When a million pixels (720p TV) or 2 million pixels (1080p TV) are put together side-by-side, the viewer sees one complete picture.

Pros:
- Longer life span (theoretically)
- Great for brightly lit rooms
- Is now available at bigger sizes like 65"
- No burn-in
- Cheaper to repair
- Uses less electricity

Cons:
- Prone to dead pixels
- Visible artifacts due to slow refresh rates (generally 60Hz)
- Harder to see in brightly lit rooms
- Plastic Screen


Plasma HDTVs:

Plasma HDTVs uses pixels that contain gases like Neon or Argon. When an electric current comes into contact with these gases, the gases heat up and turn into the plasma (thus the name), and because they are so hot, they glow. The colour they emit varies according to the electric current. Because the gases can change colour almost instantly (unlike the LCD's liquid crystals which need to alternate), they have a really high refresh rate.

Pros:
- Fantastic for dark rooms
- Glass Screen
- Very accurate colours
- Deeper blacks
- Comes in very big sizes
- Barely any artifacts due to high refresh rate

Cons:
- Uses more electricity (it'll end up costing no more than 5 cents a month)
- Prone to burn-in (if you leave the sae image on your screen for a long time)
- Slowly dims until the gases completely lose their luminosity
- Very expensive to repair
- LCD is slowly beginning to dominate HDTV market

Which is best LCD or HDTV?

A. any tv that can display images at and above 720p resolution (meaning 720p, 1080i, and 1080p) are all HDTV's, (high definition tv's).

there has never been a regular definition LCD tv. all standard def tv's are tube crt tv's. every lcd is a high def tv, it's just that it would be a 720p hdtv, or a 1080p hdtv.

What is the best way to watch dvds on a lcd hdtv? I hava an xbox360 but thinking about buying an upscaler?

Q. I might invest in a upscaling dvd to hddvd player. Should I? I have a 26" samsung lcd hdtv with hdmi input. Also, if I should, which should i get?

A. you dont need to invest in to it so soon. xbox 360 attached to hdtv via component input shows great picture. hddvd and blueray are two new upcoming formats but still a lot of controversy going on now. so better wait and enjoy normal dvds on 360 via component cable and relax.

Why does my LCD HDTV have black bars on the left and right sides of the screen?

Q. I have a 32'' widescreen audiovox LCD HDTV. I also own a comcast digital cable box, which we used to view hi-def programs through component cables. We recently got a dvi cable and now sandard-def programs have black bars on the left and right of the screen. Th HD is fine,no black bars. But standard-def channels now have black bars on the left and right, but they did not before when we used component cables. Any help would be appreciated.

A. Widescreen TV's are wider than standard def TV's. You have space left over on each side when you put the shape of a standard def program on the screen. You can always stretch or zoom, but that's your preference. I would keep it as it is and see the original content the way it was meant to be viewed.

Standard-def channels have a 4:3 aspect ratio; the width is 4/3 = 1.333 times longer than the height.

High-def channels have a 16:9 aspect ratio; the width is 16/9 = 1.78 times longer than the height.

If you take a standard def image (1.33:1) and put it in a widescreen set as large as it will fit, you will have black bars on the left and right.

It used to be that all programs (movies and television) had a 4:3 apsect ratio. When television was introduced, the theatres had to have something novel to draw audiences back to the theatre. They switched to even larger aspect rations of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 (width is 2.35 times longer than the height). Early movies like "Gone with the Wind" the original "Dracula" and even "The Wizard of Oz" were all 1.33:1 and would fit perfectly on standard def screens.

Since a lot of movies have even wider screens than HDTV's, you are going to even run into black bars on the top and bottom.

16:9 (1.78:1) is basically a compromise between standard def (1.33:1) and theater (2.35:1).

How do I connect a game console to a Vizio M261VP LED LCD HDTV?

Q. I recently got a Vizio M261VP LED LCD HDTV and when I connect my PS3 with the HDMI cable, it looks beautiful. But, when I try to connect my PS2 with the normal colored cables (yellow, red and white) the audio works but the video looks mainly blue. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

A. Video actually is made up of 3 primary colors (red, green, blue) which combines to create all the shades in between. So if you can see it, your yellow cable is working. The problem is the encoder in your PS3 that combines the RGB into a single video cable. You can't fix the PS3, but you can adjust the video on your TV with the Hue control. Just remember that it affects all yellow cable inputs, so other programs may need to be adjusted back.

How close can my LCD HDTV be to my large home stereo speakers?

Q. I have a rather small living room and I am wondering how close my LCD HDTV can be to my large home stereo speakers. When I move our older (non HD) TV too close (about 12") to our home stereo speakers the screen gets green spots and distortion. I am wondering if being too close to a large speaker will hurt or interfere with the HDTV. Thanks!

A. LCD TVs are not affected by magnets. Put the speakers where you want. You only have to worry about magnetic fields with CRT (Picture Tube) TVs.


How do I fix my HP LC3760N LCD HDTV when an intermittent green light is blinking instead of steady power on?
Q. I have an intermittent green light blinking on my HP LC3760N LCD HDTV where the power on light usually comes on. I fell asleep with my TV on during an electrical storm to find my TV in this condition. I have not been able to turn the TV on since, but the blinking green light comes on every time I plug the TV in. Is there a way to fix this problem without spending half the cost (1000/2=500) of the TV?

A. these new tvs are unreliable and fragile and generally only last 4-5 years before the back lighting goes, they don't tell you any of that or that the built-in tuners are obsolete since they cannot receive HD television, I hope it is under guarantee since most faults with these tvs are unrepairable or uneconomic to repair

You can always stretch or zoom, but that's your preference. I would keep it as it is and see the original content the way it was meant to be viewed.

Standard-def channels have a 4:3 aspect ratio; the width is 4/3 = 1.333 times longer than the height.

High-def channels have a 16:9 aspect ratio; the width is 16/9 = 1.78 times longer than the height.

If you take a standard def image (1.33:1) and put it in a widescreen set as large as it will fit, you will have black bars on the left and right.

It used to be that all programs (movies and television) had a 4:3 apsect ratio. When television was introduced, the theatres had to have something novel to draw audiences back to the theatre. They switched to even larger aspect rations of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 (width is 2.35 times longer than the height). Early movies like "Gone with the Wind" the original "Dracula" and even "The Wizard of Oz" were all 1.33:1 and would fit perfectly on standard def screens.

Since a lot of movies have even wider screens than HDTV's, you are going to even run into black bars on the top and bottom.

16:9 (1.78:1) is basically a compromise between standard def (1.33:1) and theater (2.35:1).

What is the best way to watch dvds on a lcd hdtv? I hava an xbox360 but thinking about buying an upscaler?

Q. I might invest in a upscaling dvd to hddvd player. Should I? I have a 26" samsung lcd hdtv with hdmi input. Also, if I should, which should i get?

A. you dont need to invest in to it so soon. xbox 360 attached to hdtv via component input shows great picture. hddvd and blueray are two new upcoming formats but still a lot of controversy going on now. so better wait and enjoy normal dvds on 360 via component cable and relax.

How well does a lcd hdtv work as a computer monitor?

Q. A lcd hdtv i am buying has a computer input. Will it look just as good as my computer monitor? it would save me some space.

A. It may depend on the make, but it will work well as a computer monitor.

I got my laptop hooked up to my LCD TV using an inexpensive VGA cable (same as the cable from your CPU to the computer monitor) to view my jpeg digital pictures. I could use the mouse to find my photo directories, veiw photos as a slide, etc.

When I hooked up the cable, I had the option of using the TV as the computer monitor or have both the laptop screen and the TV display on.


How to get a better picture quality on a lcd hdtv?
Q. I recently bought a 1080p lcd hdtv, right now im watching tv just through basic cable without a cable box or anything else. But when im watching tv i dont feel the picture quality is very good, it looks somewhat blurry and i just dont feel like im getting what im suppose to. I wasnt really expecting that though it being an HD ready tv and putting out 1080p. Would getting an HD cable box from my cable provider help?

A. The picture looks bad because you are looking at standard-definition channels, not HD channels.

HDTVs usually make standard-def channels look WORSE, not better!

So what you need to do is get some HD channels.

To do that with cable, you probably have to upgrade your cable account to pay extra for HD and get an HD cable box. But before you do that, you could try without a box, and have your TV scan for new channels (tell it you have digital cable when you start the scan), and it may pick up a few channels (mostly major networks) in HD. If you are happy with just those in HD, you might not need to pay extra for HD.

How do I fix my HP LC3760N LCD HDTV when an intermittent green light is blinking instead of steady power on?

Q. I have an intermittent green light blinking on my HP LC3760N LCD HDTV where the power on light usually comes on. I fell asleep with my TV on during an electrical storm to find my TV in this condition. I have not been able to turn the TV on since, but the blinking green light comes on every time I plug the TV in. Is there a way to fix this problem without spending half the cost (1000/2=500) of the TV?

A. these new tvs are unreliable and fragile and generally only last 4-5 years before the back lighting goes, they don't tell you any of that or that the built-in tuners are obsolete since they cannot receive HD television, I hope it is under guarantee since most faults with these tvs are unrepairable or uneconomic to repair


How do I connect a game console to a Vizio M261VP LED LCD HDTV?
Q. I recently got a Vizio M261VP LED LCD HDTV and when I connect my PS3 with the HDMI cable, it looks beautiful. But, when I try to connect my PS2 with the normal colored cables (yellow, red and white) the audio works but the video looks mainly blue. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

A. Video actually is made up of 3 primary colors (red, green, blue) which combines to create all the shades in between. So if you can see it, your yellow cable is working. The problem is the encoder in your PS3 that combines the RGB into a single video cable. You can't fix the PS3, but you can adjust the video on your TV with the Hue control. Just remember that it affects all yellow cable inputs, so other programs may need to be adjusted back.
