Will I see motion blur in games w/ a LCD HDTV which claims 120Hz?

Q. I like watching movies and playing PS3 games. I'm considering the new Samsung LED based LCD TV which claims a 120 Hz refresh rate.

A. Motion blur is produced by LCD TVs because of the way they operate.

A LCD TV uses a technique called "Sample & Hold". The video stream is sampled, the image is updated on the screen and then held until the next image is sampled & updated. This "Sample & Hold process" occurs at the refresh rate (50 or 60 times per second (Hz) for the typical LCD TV, 100 or 120 Hz for higher end LCD TVs).

Motion blur occurs because our brains get confused. We see a still image during the "Hold" period and then the image shifts on the next update. Motion blur is created in our brains. You can not capture motion blur on an LCD TV screen with a camera because the blur is not actually on the screen, it's in our brains.

Because motion blur is created in the brain, motion blur varies by the individual's sensitivity to motion blur. Some people see more blur than others.

To remove motion blur from an LCD TV requires that the "Hold" period be reduced below our brain's threshold for the detection of blur. This generally requires a LCD TV to use at least a 240 Hz refresh rate. An LED back lit LCD TV operating at 120 Hz will not remove motion blur from the minds of most people. It will do a good job of removing motion jitter.

Additional Details: C is well meaning but obviously misguided when it comes to LCD motion blur. A LCD TV can NOT eliminate motion blur with fast response time LCDs only. You must eliminate "Sample & Hold" techniques or decrease the "Hold" time.

Plasma TVs do not produce motion blur the way that a LCD TV produces blur because they flash an image and allow the screen to decay to black. Because our brains do not see a fixed image but flashed images, we do not induce blur into the image. Instead, Plasma TVs produce what is called phosphor blur. The green phosphors fade slower than the blue or red phosphors so some people are able to see the green phosphor blur on moving objects on a plasma display panel.
